    Commas In CSV Feed
I'm working with the feed for The House using the Raw Datafeed with comma separated. The problem is that they have a couple of lines with "," in the Description field, and it's breaking the import.

I don't want to try going with tab separated since I'm using a Class that works on all the other feeds with ",". I don't want to edit in Excel as this is going to be updated with Cron.

Has anybody dealt with this before?

.. frustrating, yes, I've dealt with this before.. not for The House, but another merchant.

I had no choice but to run a script that filters out every line in which the description field contains ",".

I found a handy little open-source executable that can be run local or server-side, ahead of your import (you enter the parameters based on the instructions). I will dig up the link if you like, I'm not good enough to program this type of thing myself, the little app did the trick...

If you can find it I would like to take a look. It seems like pipe delimited would avoid this, but they don't have that option.

No prob, I keep it handy

    http://stahlworks.com/dev/swiss-file-knife.html

Don't let the jargon fool you, click on the small link on the left-hand side for "filter line" (I'm not programmer, but I muddled through!).

    Quick examples:

    1) To create a file that "only" contains shoes:
    sfk filter filename.txt ++"Shoes" > shoes_only.txt

    2) Or, to exclude "shoes":
    sfk filter filename.txt -!"Shoes" > no_shoes.txt

Without looking at your file, there should be some way to isolate the comma.. this utility recognize columns too (I just gave sweeping samples above off the top of my head).

You can test the command line in your normal DOS environment (I found that easier for testing), then move it over to your server.

I'm sure there are programming types around here who would know how to do this using php, but I'm not one of them. This saved me a lot of time & trouble!

I think that I'll work on getting the merchant to clean it up. I have found that merchants that have problematic feeds aren't worth the trouble. I'll check with AvantLink tomorrow and see what they recommend.

For some reason I don't see David's response. For that matter when I look in support there are 3 tickets and all that I can see is my initial post.

But I have a solution that seems to be working now. I abandoned CSV in favor of XML and it seems to work great. Now they can stuff all the commas they want in the description.

AvantLink is number one in my book.

I found the email sitting on my server since early this morning. I don't know why it didn't get downloaded by Thunderbird as it's set to check every 5 mins. I'll have to keep an eye on that to see what's up.
