Linkshare Reporting Can Cause a Merchant to Terminate an Affiliate
I received the following email today from Linkshare:
    Dear Affiliate-

This notice is to remind you that old creative for the American Express Canada affiliate program was to have been updated on 8/18/08. Our reports have shown your site was tracked as still displaying either an old text or creative banner in the past week. Please verify that all old text and banner links have been replaced with new ones as old creative will be deleted.

We appreciate your prompt cooperation in this matter and please let us know if you have any other questions.

    Thanks,

    The LinkShare Affiliate Team
    My reply:
We do not participate in the American Express CANADA affiliate program. If your system is showing that a link was attributed to the [my site] affiliate program, it is not posted on our site, [my site]. This is not the first time this has happened with Linkshare. A few years ago, Orbitz terminated us when Linkshare's system was showing an expired link attributed to us. After we assured them there was no such link on our site and they could not provide any documentation other than what Linkshare was showing, they still terminated us. Then a week later, they reinstated us with no explanation or apology.

If you cannot provide proof that we are violating your program, you cannot just rely on your reporting system. For an affiliate who never breaks any rules, this is highly offensive. If you are going to make such an accusation, you need to provide a link to where the expired American Express link appears.

Please get back with me and respond to my comments.
    Their response:
I apologize for this but it seems as though this was sent to the wrong group of affiliate because of a mix up in banner IDs. Iím sorry for the confusion and rest assured there is not compliance violation from your site.

    Thank you for your understanding!

    Sincerely,

    Kate
I'm glad I received an apology but this shows extreme sloppiness by Linkshare. After all, this same sloppiness caused us to be terminated by Orbitz's then affiliate manager, Lynette Rowlands in March 2006. She was absolutely horrible to deal with and apparently destroyed the Orbitz affiliate program. My relationship with them, including Angela Conley who has been there for years as the assistant before she became the affiliate manager when Lynette left (hopefully fired), has never been the same. I was one of their top performing affiliates in their early days and even won a contest.

Linkshare, you need to do a better job because your unchecked system is causing HUGE problems by falsely accusing affiliates of non-compliance issues.

Must be a temporary technical error.

This is what programming is like:

Nothing temporary about it and it's not a joke either. This is a very serious Linkshare issue that has been occuring for years. I think you'd realize the seriousness if it happened to you.

    Affiliate Misdeeds
If Linkshare is terminating affiliates for reporting old links, then a very good way for a less than honest affiliate to cull the competition is to just run old ads with the id of the affiliate they want to discredit.

Linkshare reporting is causing merchants to wrongly take action. In this case, Linkshare manages the American Express program.

I may have missed the point above. But I can see that this is happening with credit card merchant. They are a bit more selective in issues and quick to drop an affiliate. I wouldn't judge all merchants in Linkshare as doing the same.

Yes, you missed the point. The point is that Linkshare is providing erroneous information which causes some merchants to make rash decisions such as what I described about Orbitz terminating me. Since they reinstated me a week later with no explanation, I suspect that they learned later that they were basing their action on erroneous information.

A true violation is one thing, but there was no violation in either case with me.

Connie, did you get an email retracting the accusation, indicating it was an error?

Dan, since I don't appreciate your attempt to hijack my thread, plese display some etiquette by posting your issue as its own topic which has absolutely nothing to do with this one.

It is hard to tell from the events you describe whether the problem is in LinkShare's reporting, or in the merchant's ability to correctly query the data they are looking for.

That's seems different from what they told me which I quoted above. Seems like Linkshare can't get their story straight. Bottom line though is that Linkshare screwed up.
