    Question Google.co.uk - .co.uk or .com Domains?
Does anyone know if Google.co.uk shows more preference to .co.uk domains than to .com ones (when the optimization is equally beautiful in Google's eyes at both sites), or is the TLD irrelevant even if the end user chooses to search "pages from the UK" only, and it's all about hosting your site on a UK server?

    Thanks.

    Geno

I would guess that it would give preference to .co.uk TLDs

However, if the website is registered on Google Webmaster Tools you can specify the country visitor restrictions.

I have both .com & .co.uk domains (neither hosted in the UK)

Under google.co.uk, when you select "only show pages from the uk", the .com doesn't appear at all.

When the toggle is on for "the web", .com is given higher preference.

It has always been rumoured your hosting *should* be in the UK, I think that issue may have long since been resolved by google (some uk domains were penalized for being hosted in germany, for example).

I haven't found this to be the case at all for my domains. Results show nicely as they should...

Again, this isn't theoretical, I just googled my domains without the extension

(added: webmaster tools looks at the TLD in some cases; if it's .co.uk, the geographic target setting is disabled)

Thank you, teezone. If anyone else has experience with this, I'd highly appreciate your input too.

    Thanks,

    Geno

PS: Did some extra searching, and found an interesting thread on it at Webmaster World.

"Local Googles" always weight in favour of local web sites. This sort of thing paid for my sports car

Google determines this by country TLD (e.g. .uk, .ru, .de), IP address or very recently by a setting that you can apply via Google Webmaster Tools .

A very easy way to demonstrate this is to go to a local Google and type "Google Maps" then note the results.
