Getting images when only links are provided
I'm under the impression that my site will do better if it actually has a preview of the product. But, what if the affiliate program does not provide images in the links they provide?

My solution is to download the whole site and write an algorithm that joins products to images. Is there an easier way?

Most affiliate programs will allow you to use the images from their site. Just check with them first to make sure you are not violating any of their TOS.

I'd ask them for a list of product SKUs with URLs to corresponding product images, outlining the benefits it will have for them. They can easily pull it from their database. You can also illustrate the importance of giving affiliates access to such data by showing them what competitors of theirs offer affiliate datafeeds.

Wink Custom link to a page
SAS has an option that allows you to build a custom link to a page. Just grab some images you like and create hyper links via that option. It takes a lot longer than data feeds and the make a page option but I have had great success doing it. Plus banners really don't work as well as images.

You need to check with the merchant first before actually downloading images from their site, they may require you to hotlink rather than host the images yourself due to fluctuating inventory or copyright or trademark restrictions of some of the items they carry. On the flip side, other merchants may NOT want you to hotlink to their images.

If a merchant doesn't give you image urls, check with them to find out why, might be just an oversight on their part.
