Against family members calling and starting the conversation with "I have bad news. [Insert stepdad's name] has been in an accident today" and using that tone of voice that stops your heart from beating. Then taking forever (ok it was actually probably only 5 minutes...but my heart wasn't beating) to get to what has actually happened. Which turns out (thankfully) to not nearly as bad as my imagination was telling me while I waited for the news.

Sheesh, now I have to go find all the new gray hairs on my head and pull them out.

B, some relatives just like to create that build-up drama! Glad the news was not too bad!

PS - I am 50 and pull out the few grays I have.
They don't seem to be growing back! Think that's an old wives tale.
For my age I am lucky, I still have very few. I think it's more genetics or young thinking
or young ..... fill in the blanks!

I think I'd be giving the person who called a few grays!

PS It's less painful to just cut off each gray very close to the scalp...

Budda, sorry to hear about your Mom. I used to work quite a bit with dialysis folks and know what that is like.

In fairness to my Mom, I can understand why she had the tone in her voice and it is kind of hard to find a way to start that kind of conversation. What actually happened was my silly stepdad was crushing cans to recycle. Being male, he had to make some type of contraption to crush the cans which involves a pnuematic pump. Men and their toys. He managed get his finger caught in it and take off the end just before the first joint. It was just the 10 minutes or so of me finding out EXACTLY what had happened. My poor Mom has the worst luck with the men she is married to managing to keep all their body parts. My dad lost his leg and cut off the tip of one of his fingers. So I'm sure that had a lot to do with the tone of her voice when she called. Being the good daughter I haven't given her too much grief over scaring the daylights out of me. Considering my stepdad was telling everyone who would listen at the ER that he hurt himself by crushing beer cans (Mom was not impressed), has been holding his hand up in the air ever since (the doc told him to keep it above his heart for the next couple of days and he's going to do what the doctor says), and is thinking he's going to the casino tomorrow. I'm beginning to think my Mom needs more sympathy than he does. Life's never dull when you are married to a crazy coon@ss.

Linda, my gray hairs grow back if I pull them, but they don't multiply either. I'm actually lucky on that one also. My Mom started getting them when she was 16. We were all paranoid as teenagers it was going to be genetic.

phew I'm glad it was not as bad as you thought it was Ms.B.
I could not agree more though about the tone of voice and the time to get to the nitty gritty.

I started to pull my grey hairs out and look where it got me.....
I've got more hair in my ears and up my nose than I have on my head so be careful

I'm and optimist and I don't play those games. pisses my mom off big time. This really happened, I see my mom and she tells me my nephew was mugged. The next sentence was he was walking down the street and then.... I told her, don't tell me, my brother (father of my nephew will tell me). She goes on a bit more and I told her, don't tell me, I didn't want the big story.

I knew when the second sentence wasn't "He's in the hospital and we are going to see him now" that it was no big deal.

Anyway, I still don't know exactly what happened, but since we never went to the hospital, police station etc, it all amounted to, my newphew losing a few dollars and having to call all the credit card people. After all as far as I know he didn't miss a day of work :-)

Sorry to hear about you're s-Dad's finger.

My Mom's a bit of a drama queen too. Just the other day she did the {{{big sigh}}} "I don't know what we're going to do!" over something that's not that big a deal.

Ms. B - I feel for you. There should be a law for alot of things our families do to us. But to think that someone has been killed, maimed, or worse and finding out he hurt his finger crushing beer cans...ah, well, I guess just count your lucky stars that you're just annoyed and not mourning.

My father lost the tip of his finger too...using a log splitter. Men and toys indeed. These were not big logs.

As for grays - I got my first at 16 years old and they've multiplied ever since. When I let my natural color grow out (rarely) people are AMAZED that someone in their 20s has so much gray. Grrrr.
