It comes to a point where valueclick may potentially kill the rest of the online advertising pool by buying them out and then not effecient running them, or making changes that will stiffle marketing creativity.

Plus you have the monopolistic aspect of it all, some of these mergers may not ever be approved including CJ

Take a step back and look at the bigger picture, too. With Google soon to be public, the whole online landscape is about to experience a major shift. Just consider Froogle for a minute. In the hands of a privately owned company with a good reputation, it seemed relatively benign. In the hands of a publicly owned company that will soon measure its worth by the weekly profit reports, it could be a fearsome threat to affiliates.

As Ms. B surmises, Performics could be on the block. It makes sense that ValueClick grow its powerbase to stake out a dominant position. With Google going public and Microsoft always looming, it's shaping up to be a messy battle.

"kill the rest of the online advertising"

Don't put all your eggs in one basket

    Don't trust anyone.

Join VC, CJ, performics, but you never know when one of these companies will go under or pull the rug from under you, sell out and leave you standing with 10,000 broken links.

Perhaps building as many sites as possible from diff affiliate companies and diff merchants is the safest way, just incase, do you think?

    Yes, diversify.

Mr.Merchant, if you do business in any way what-so-ever with parasites, your products will not be sold on my sites!!

Farewell, CJ! I loved you when you were young and pure. I will try to remember you that way. Disclaimer: Comments are to be interpreted as opinion unless otherwise noted.

Well if google starts manipulating the serps, people will figure it out and move on to the next search engine. It happened to alta vista and others, it can happen to google too. Plus, as webmasters we can push other engines on people to help the "migration".

Microsoft had their own affiliate marketing scheme going for a while, then let it fizzle. Probably didn't pump enough money into it to make their employees want to work it right.

I wonder if it is still on the back burner to emerge in another form?

It is never a good idea to have only one big player.
