I'm hoping someone can help me understand the affiliate provider options available to me as a merchant...

I'm a small retailer, and I expect to sell $10k - $80k worth of products per year. I'd like to join an affiliate network such as Commission Junction, BeFree, or LinkShare.

However, I've been pricing these three providers and have found the following -- Because of the setup and monthly charges I must pay the providers *in addition* to a percentage of my affiliate-generated revenue, it gets prohibitively expensive unless I'm driving tons of sales.

For Example, LinkShare charges a $10k setup fee, a $2k monthly fee, and 2.5% of affiliate-generated revenue. If I break this out monthly, I'm paying $2,830 per month PLUS 2.5%. If I'm able to get $5k per month from affiliate sales, i'd be paying a fee that is more than 50% of the revenue I drive.

Can anyone provide any insight into this?

    Thanks

    Guy

Shareasale is a good low-entry cost option.

In addition, you could also go the "indie" route and have your own system either built (as we did), or have it integrated with one of the off the shelf affiliate software providers.

Keep in mind, either choice may limit your options. With a network, you may save alot of time in the day to day administration tasks of an affilaite program, but may be limited in the tools/methods your affiliates may use to link.

With an in-house system, you can specifiy exactly how you want everything built...and you also may get the added benefit of a "branded" link (i.e. www.yoursite.com?affilaiteId as opposed to www.affiliatenetwork.com/dsafhs/ID/fdshbjk/32432?dsfds&adaheufn .....etc.)

    www.affiliateclicks.com

is KowaBunga!'s smallest solution built for business just like yours who want to slowly walk into the Affiliate marketing store.

A tiny bit more than Sharasale at $199 and $25/month, but the difference is...

You don't pay commissions to us. They are all yours only. Our team offers 24 hour setup too.

My personal recommendation - at the numbers you discussed (even the high end) is that you start with one of the smaller networks, or smaller "indie" software solutions.

Even at your high end of 80,000 a year sales - and assuming a 20% commission to affiliates - you wouldn't meet certain minimums at some larger networks.

The differences between a network solution and an indie solution are many - I would suggest calling a few places you are considering to make sure that things will work the way that you are imagining them to ... our main office number is listed in the "Contact Us" page...of the site (http://www.shareasale.com/help-contact.cfm)

    Thanks,

Personally, I'd definitely recommend Shareasale. While AffiliateClicks is also a fantastic offering, the established base of affiliates is missing. I've been on SaS for two years, have met Brian and know his offering / capabilities 100% ... he's got my vote!

Shareasale is an "affiliate friendly" network, as well as one of the FEW affiliate networks that put ethics first in the battle against Parasites.

I would Suspect that it may be easier to start a program with them than it would be to set up your own private program, unless you have some experience in that area.

Aside from knowing that Shareasale is an EXCELENT network, I had the pleasure of meeting Brian on Monday night and he's a totally cool guy. So there you have another reason to go with Shareasale.

    We have run the gammit

    LinkShare:
    Setup Fee 10,000
    Monthly Fee 3,000
    Ongoing Fees + 3%

    Commission Junction:
    Setup Fee 2250 + 3000 deposit = 5250

    BeFree:
    Setup Fee 2250 + 2000 = 4250

Share a Sale is your best bet.
Brian, is a nice guy that will help you.

If that takes off the Kowabunga in house can be added.

I am a merchant at BOTH Commission Junction and Shareasale.
For your size SAS is the only real option , but it doesn't have the large affiliate base that cj has , so you will HAVE to WORK at getting a large affiliate base. Being an honest , affiliate friendly merchant and having a presence here at ABW will help in this effort.

CJ fees are only the BEGINNING , there is a $500 per month minimum , (SAS none) , product link set-up starts at $750 PLUS a monthly fee , (SAS none , but they don't host your pics so it will cost you bandwidth )

I started with CJ , but was asked by many members here at ABW to run the concurrent program. Many affiliates do not like CJ for a number of reasons.

Later you can run a concurrent program at another network. BTW - no one really knows in what "form" CJ will exist in a few months from now , since they are in the midst of a buyout , which also goes for Befree.

    Hope this helps.
