For those of you asleep this weekend, Google just pulled out an old fashioned update today. Lots of talk over on webmasterworld about it, and indeed, the main Google serps ARE different - at least for things I check.

Also do some checks on www-in.google.com. This seems to be where the new main Google index is coming from.

Since this seems like the old Google Dance of days gone by, don't forget that the SERPS are likely to be constantly changing during this period.

Thus, don't jump out of high windows just yet if things aren't bouncing your way quite yet.

They must've tuned into the news regarding the first dance in 143 years at Wheaton College and decided it was time for them to dance again too.

www-in.google.com looks old to me, i changed the title tags around some pages and www-in has the old versions. Imagine the excitement and for some horror, when Yahoo switches to INK in a few months, boards will be jumping.

Some changes.. maybe more emphasis on anchor tags. Up some places. A few sites down.

With freshbot it's harder to tell what the difference is.. I haven't done a thorough check on my keywords since August.

Does anyone know which of the 10 datacenters has been updated and which haven't? For one of our search terms we're 3rd or 4th except in one data center we're 20th. I hadn't checked this term in a long time and I don't remember where we were before.

    Thanks,
    Robin

Good thing to do is just wait 4-5 days and let everything settle, then go from there.

Googlebot's been crawling my pages hard the past 6 or 8 hours. Just in time to not make the new update, I suppose.

I thought she rested during the dance?

Well, my own site has taken quite a battering - most clients are still solid, except for one that always end up on page 3 everytime there is a major update. Dunno about my affiliate stuff though - I haven't checked it in about 6 months ! I notice one major group of spammers have been dropped though. Ha,ha.

Google is going into the pre-IPO strategy period and realize their moves to make their listings and Adwords produce meaningful results for their searchers is all important. Make the right move to shore up Googles user base as Yahoo -MSN -AOL flounder about on new competitive unproven changes.

My take is that every move Google takes to clean out the spammers will help me and my ecommerce clients get better listing ranks. They can start with their CASH COW Adwords and companion Adsense. Froogle needs to be 100% order taking merchant listings. Enforce their TOS by making the affiliate SEO schemers ( Dupers & small fry) label the Adwords as "affiliate" links. I'll start reporting the cookie setting trademark/Brand interlopers that show up on my Adsense pages if the URL list doesn't filter them out of grabbing my visitors.

Maybe I should clarify what I mean by grabbing my shoppers from Google trolled content on my pages. Huge Overstock COUPON enticements that either redirect to OS home page as OverStock automatically credits EVERY shopper there with current offers or land them on a page like this ... http://www.thegoodshopguide.com/overstock.com.html

This site is themed for UK merchants by an affiliate ...no problem except the shopper has no exit links to their main sites content as this is a doorway page. Sneakier is the delayed Flashy popups/unders they subject my shopper too with this deceptive BHO theftwarez *******.
    http://www.greasypalm.co.uk/register_1.php

Notice the nice reward earning front end spin and a short look at the terms infers the reward shopper has to start their incent shopping from the GreasyPalm.com website. DUPERS like this even offer the sleezebag affiliates a program just like eBates -WhenU -Gator -iGive etc etc.

It's all a Crock of shit as further looking in the TOS reveals......

SHOULD YOU FAIL TO COMPLY WITH ANY OF THE ABOVE, YOUR USER RIGHTS ARE AUTOMATICALLY TERMINATED. THIS TERMINATION WILL BE IN ADDITION TO ANY CRIMINAL, CIVIL OR OTHER REMEDIES WHICH SUBMISSION TECHNOLOGY LTD MAY SEEK.

Here's an example of a greed driven affiliate with a legit domain web site, who plays sleezebag games in the background to hijack traffic, willing to push unethical programs on my unsuspecting shoppers. I suspect the lack of back links on the Adwords landing pages for hundreds of keywords ( Merchant + Coupon/reward) is to set the cookie, set the popups/unders without jeopardizing his own domain web sites image.

So here we have a real educated affiliate. He builds out a bookmarkable site for UK shoppers. Then spamms the free SE's wiht all the "tricks for clicks" , uses Adwords as his own free BHO ( letting Google read the keywords just like a BHO) and pushes a real BHO parasite on his drive thru visitor.

    Back to the Google update...

Quick theory, no real evidence -

    either

    (a) external site backlinks have not been added to the update yet

    or

    (b) the changes made in sept 02 to stop the microsoft "go to hell" links etc have been made smarter to stop SEO's using multiple variations of link anchor text to target a main search term

    Any other theories?

Well, glad to hear there is a reason why my Google traffic has been all over the board for the past couple of days. Have had my Google traffic range from as few as one referral per hour to well above what I would normally see from Google for my main site.

Since Google is my number one source of traffic, I'm hoping for the best when it all settles.

Has anyone ventured over to WebMasterWorld to read the Google News forum about the "florida update" at all. Quite the crowd over there.

Makes for interesting, if speculative, reading if you're really bored.

I was excited to see a dance finally happen... until I looked at the results. I got BURIED in every term I can think of!

I went from #1 in a few terms to not even in the top 100!

UGHHH, this is not what I need during this time of year!

They definately changed something in the way they calculate listings.

I hope when the dust settles I am back up there.

Holy ****! I just found most of my new pages ranking in the top ten with a lot of number one's for my major Christmas keywords. Holiday shoppers have doubled my traffic since this time last week. Funny, though, that MSN replaced Google as my top referrer so far this month.

Well, I can't say that they've replaced Google as my top referrer, but I certainly get a lot more traffic from them than I ever used to, percentagewise.
