OK ABWers here's a chance to get the national media and the Presidential electorate up in arms for hijacking systems with parasites and spyware. Let's crusade against the Ad Whores and privacy info peddlers...... The Center For Democracy & Technology 1634 Eye Street NW, Suite 1100 Washington,DC 20006

Do you have a story about "spyware," "snoopware," or "trespassware," particularly software that piggy-backed on another program that now just won't go away? If so, we want to hear your story!

CDT believes that the US Federal Trade Commission has jurisdiction over companies who entered into shaky End User License Agreements (EULAs) with consumers and then won't let them leave. We want to collect stories; try out and catalog some of the more egregious cases for ourselves; and then file complaints with the FTC on behalf of everyone who complained......

CDT Releases "Spyware" Report and Calls on Net Users to Send Stories - CDT today released a report addressing the growing problem of so-called "spyware" programs, which range from targeted advertising programs to more invasive key stroke loggers and screen capture utilities that can be used to steal passwords and aid identity theft. The report examines types of spyware; suggests policy solutions to the problem, including legislation and better enforcement of current laws; and offers tips to consumers who want to take steps to avoid spyware on their computers. In conjunction with the report, CDT has begun a campaign on its website calling on Internet users to send in their experiences with specific "spyware" products, so that CDT can collect the most egregious cases and file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission. We know you care about privacy. We've created this web site to make it as easy as possible for you to opt-out of having your personal information shared and sold by the companies you interact with. Here's how you can get your name off the lists:

    1) In the "Generate Opt-Out Forms" section - We have taken many of the companies that do not allow you to opt-out online and created a system so that you can: a) generate a group of letters, b) print them out individually, c) fill in the particularly sensitive information, and d) mail them in to the proper address (sorry, but you'll have to provide your own postage).
    2) In the "Opt Out Online" section - We have set up links to the companies that do allow you to opt-out online. We place these links within frames so that you can simply fill out each opt-out form and then move on to the next one.

Spyware can cause sluggish PC performance and system instability, and can unleash a barrage of pop-up ads and unsolicited bulk e-mail, popularly known as spam. In the most egregious cases, spyware can be extremely invasive -- it can track what Web sites people visit and the keywords they enter in search engines. It also can hijack their Internet connections.

Some well known spyware programs often show up in peer-to-peer (P2P) file-swapping software that people download to trade digital music and video files on the Internet. P2P software often contains programs like Bonzi Buddy and Gator, which collect data on users' surfing and shopping habits and send it to a third party that develops profiles for targeted pop-up ads.

In April 2002, privacy experts discovered that Kazaa -- the most popular file-sharing software -- is bundled with a program called "Altnet." Sharman Networks, Kazaa's parent company, said it would use Altnet to harness small amounts of the processing power on Kazaa users' computers which it would then sell to other Altnet customers that need the power. Computer users would not be compensated.

Nows your chance to influence the FTC, general consumers and the networks to close down the S/W pluggin affiliates. File multiple complaints agianst individual BHO's and their spyware buddies and point them to abestweb.com

Even Microsoft is a donor to this cause.

Would someone who has Haiko's ear kindly plead with him to create a huge ABW promotion and forum for just this anti-BHO cause.
