What are the must-haves of a successful web-site?
This isn't a site review, I thought this would be the best forum though.

My site is getting a makeover and redesign for usability, conversions and SEO

Not getting too much into SEO, but focusing more on security for customers, confidence for customers and usability to increase conversion rates what do you think are must halves for a web-site?

I was referred to an SEO company by a family friend who has had much success with her site and their work. I figured I couldn't beat that for confidence. We are in the starting phases of this SEO makeover...and I am pleased and confident in them.

They turned in a thorough 12 page report of SEO recommendations, and I am making them all.

While organizing to begin the revisions and while analyzing my competition's sites I noticed I am missing a few major things. Things that will help in confidence thus conversions.

Here is my list of revisions for usability and confidence...please add to it...I imagine these ideas will help us all.

    1. Privacy Policy -can't believe I overlooked that...even more so...can't believe we get consistent sales without it.

    2. Terms and Conditions Policy " "

    3. Affiliate Agreement " "

    4. Toll free number

    5. Web mail address in addition to Contact form

    6. Accept all forms of credit cards * any thoughts on imperative other forms of payments?

    7. Currency Converter in the store

    8. that's the end of my list so far. I am sure I am overlooking *major and minor additions to build confidence....how great would a streaming thread of ideas and suggestions be to us all

I thought of another important category for ideas.

New category for successful web-site: Fun-Factor

It could be beneficial to have a section of the web-site dedicated to a topic of no relevance to the web-site concept, but there if the user has some free time, and make it fun and interactive.

I would label ABW as a successful web-site, and has in my mind a very high fun factor.

One idea that comes to mind....an interactive contest. Video is popular, maybe home movie funny video contest. 3 dollar entry fee with 1000 dollars in three place prizes. prize money could vary on traffic to the site.

    ideas

There are specific links people expect to find in the footer: Privacy, FAQ, Help, Contact, Policies, Sitemap, About Us. There should not be a link to every page in the footer unless the site is tiny and even then that's not where folks expect to find navigation links.

I don't think you'll find a lot of consensus on Must-Haves because so many things depend on the type of site you're building.

Oops. That came from my SEO report, but I miss quoted them. They say the same as you...links to *select pages in footer + sitemap

Targeted Traffic sounds so easy and yet is so hard.

I wish I had enough traffic to start worrying about usability and conversion rates.

You can make section pages that would contain the links and put the section links in the footer if it is feasible.

Have a home-page that tells people what your site is about and gets them excited about it at the same time. Think about your target visitor; what is he looking for, how can you satisfy his desire, what kind of emotions would he experience if all his problems were solved? Try to generate these emotions on your homepage.

On your home-page have links to other parts of your site in the content body and in a navagational bar at the top.

Here's a few suggestions that every ecommerce store should consider and test.

    1. breadcrumb trail
    2. live chat
    3. related items (buyers who bought this, also bought these)
    4. free shipping terms defined on every page above the fold
    5. wishlist
    6. real testimonials of customers
    7. video demo of digital products (or camtasia of powerpoint presentation)
    8. a blog
    9. way to capture emails
    10. a coupon (or coupon code) on the receipt page for the next purchase
    11. affiliate program

  15. Newsletter Signup
