AutoAnything is Promoting Phone Sales Today
Auto Anything seems to be promoting phones sales today. They are making some type of offer, if you call in you may get an additional 15% off.
I noticed this while doing a routine check of my PPC for them.
Is this a normal thing with them? How do you react when you pay to send them traffic and they are encouraging people to make the transaction over the phone? Obviously, I paused my PPC to them.
This is very frustrating, especially at this time of year.
How do you approach these type of situations?

Where do you see the invitation to call them for a discount?

Geno: thank you for bringing this to my attention this morning.

Upper management is testing a phone-in promotion today. Knowing this type of promotion may negatively impact affiliates, we have implemented coding on our site that will not display the phone-in promotion when a visitor arrives via an affiliate link. Visitors that arrive via an affiliate link will also be cookied so they will not see the phone-in promotion upon return visits to our site for the duration of the promotion, regardless of how they arrive at our site (affiliate link, PPC ad, direct URL, etc). We are also in the process of implementing phone tracking early next year. Please know that I fought against running this type of promotion, but I was ultimately overruled by upper management.

Thanks for your fast input Jeff. Great to know about the cookie/affiliate link thing. How ever this is what I get when I go through an affiliate link(see attached).

Visitors that arrive via an affiliate link should not see any mention of the phone promo on the home page or in the thin, narrow banner on other pages. I did discover a coding issue that may have caused this error; this issue was fixed at about 10:00 AM PST. Please let me know if you have any additional questions or conerns. My contact information is also included in my sig.

Does this coding work with GoldenCan clicks? That is the affiliate link I'm clicking through and I still get the narrow banner.

I have to say I have a TRUE admiration for Jeff.
It took a lot for him to jump in to what could have been a very volatile situation and deal with affiliate issues in a very prompt and professional manner.
You've set the bar for the rest of us Jeff.
    Nice work.

Does that mean that affiliate clicks through GoldenCan weren't tracked today till the issue got fixed.

Tracking was not affected as it is unrelated to the URL parameters that trigger banners on our site.

I am not trying to be mean and I do appreciate your help and promptness in resolving this issue.
But I don't understand how a GC link is different form any other affiliate link. All aff links thru CJ are the same, with different PIDs. So why wd it work for all the affiliates and not for the GC link.

You're not being mean in any way - these are great questions.

We append hidden parameters to affiliate URLs via our affiliate networks (CJ & GAN). These parameters trigger the affiliate banners on our site. I discovered that the parameters on the GoldenCan links are differenent than the parameters attached to general CJ and GAN links. This separate GoldenCan parameter had not been added to our system to trigger the affiliate banners, which is why GoldenCan links were showing the wrong creative.

Affiliate tracking is cookie based. Visitors clicking through any affiliate link still received the affiliate cookie from the networks. The hidden URL parameters have no effect on or relation to the network cookies.
