4 Positions at top for hyper competitive phrases?
Has Google always had 4 positions above the SERPs for hyper competitive keyphrases, or is this a new phenomenon?

Care to post an example? I'm still showing only 3 for some of my sample searches.

Well, I can't reproduce it. Google Analytics is telling me I'm getting clicks in the 4 spot on Top though. But very few. Which makes me think they are playing with it, and have just started doing so recently?

Here's a search that they are reporting for: http://www.google.com/search?sourcei...q=ring+binders

As a side note, that's a very competitive, very broad term (ring binders). However, for my long tail campaigns, I'm not seeing Analytics report any impressions in the 4th spot on top. Which is why I'm guessing they might be trying it for hyper-competitive keyphrases.

I can only get three to show.

Another thing I noticed, Google Base products are no longer displaying. Wonder if they quit doing that?

Can't blame them for trying to squeeze a few more ad dollars out during this economy. And if the traffic converts, all the better for us. I'll keep an eye out to see if they go to 4 full-time for certain searches.

If someone has Analytics installed, but doesn't know how to find the info:

    Traffic Sources, AdWords, KeyWord Position.

Then you can play from there.

Going through my top 30, I found 4 keywords that were shown in the #4 top spot. Thanks for posting, Kevin. I never looked at that report before.

Wanted to post an update on this. As it turns out, some of the Search Partners have 4 on the top. So if you have any campaigns running on the whole Search network, you might see that.

But per Google, they haven't opened a fourth spot above the SERPs.

Yep. I have that too for a couple of broad terms. Funny though, when I search for those terms I never see an ad in the fourth spot.
