    Dedicated server
Time to move up I think, currently on a VPS.

Recommendations? I've looked at HostGator as they seem to have a good reputation on this board, but $174 a month is a bit more than I was hoping for.

Hostgator is a pain in the ass with their chisel in hand. With a site that barely got 10k U/V per day, running no scripts or any other CPU-intensive processes, they pushed and pushed me to upgrade because of suspicious slowdowns in service (suspicious because there were no problems until the day they solicited me for an upgrade).

    Liquidweb is solid.

I highly recommend softlayer.com. Their support is very good. They will work with you to schedule maintenance windows. They give you advanced notice of outages. (only once in over a year, lasted only a couple of minutes) They have a ton of features that allow you to grow your business. I currently use them for 3 servers, a hardware load balancer and a CDN network. Softlayer is also much cheaper than Rackspace..

Remember, as far as dedicated hosting goes, you get what you pay for.

Avoid Hostgator like the plague. Go rackspace or such.

If you have lots of sites or plan on lots of traffic it's worth it. We are up to now 3 of them.

Thanks for the suggestions, I've emailed for a few quotes and will compare those that have been named here when I have them back.

It seems that going to dedicated is a whole new world, so I'm starting again rather than assuming the hosts I like at lower levels can do it at the next order of magnitude.

    Thanks again

How about off-loading your static content to a CDN or another VPS at another datacenter? I'm finding even round-robin load distribution of static content can improve your performance without a huge upgrade.

It could still be a very different experience dealing with them vs. dealing with ThePlanet directly. For instance, HostGator may have chosen servers which are too underpowered for the plans they are selling. Also, the "slowdowns" DavidH mentioned could be easily engineered by HG regardless of the server's true capacity.

I switched from Rackspace to ThePlanet a year or so ago, and haven't had any problems with them. (Rackspace is managed hosting, and I realized I could do fine with unmanaged.)

Unmanaged is cheaper, but when considering a package, remember to include the automatic backups and firewall in your cost estimate. These things are often included with shared or VPS setups, and are easy to forget when price-shopping for a dedi the first time.

i use liquidweb and really like them. prices are fair and support is excellent.

check the specials they run at the webhostingtalk forum. (in the "offers" section i think) i got a great deal that way. also try contacting them and ask what kind of deal you can get. from my experience hosting companies are willing to make deals especially if you are ready to buy that day and are not just "kicking tires"

Rackspace is got to be the high price kid on the block.

What can managed hosting do differently than you logging into your server and doing what you need to.

Can someone tell me what they manage or what you get?
