I am redoing my site and need some advice.

Currently, all files are .shtml. Is this going to casue problems if I rebuild the entire site as .html? I can use an .htaccess file to forwrd all 404 errors to the index page, but is this going to hurt my SERP's and rankings? Please help.

    Thanks,

Use a 301 redirect from your old file names to the new ones. The rewrite module for apache will do just fine.

    Hey bcc,

I am not a programmer, can you share some detailed info? Perhaps a tutorial somewhere? I would appreciated that. Otherwise, it's back to good old .shtml.

    TIA!

    Apache Documentation

There is a variety of ways to do it, and you don't need to be a 'programmer'.

If you have access, set up a file called test_file.blah . You can then test the re-direct by entering the permanent re-direct as shown in the documentation, permanently re-directing *.blah to *.html . Once you're comfortable with that, then it's a simple matter of changing the .blah to .shtml .

why not just leave it as shtml, other than the very slight parsing overhead at least it leaves the option of using SSI in the future open

    hey Candaien eh,

I was wondering that as an option. It just makes it easier for me when I run php codes of an .html page rather thatn .php. Don't want to scare off any users hahaha. Thanks for the suggestion.
