i tend to like the free software when it works well

It seems to me that a lot of sites use google for their site search lately, i guess it's a lot easier than having to manage code

What about Google custom search - http://www.google.com/coop/cse/
They finally removed their name from inside the search box. That was highly appreciated. Plus, you can make money with adsense in the searches.

The problem with Google search is that your site web pages will NOT show up in the search results unless G has indexed every page in your site.

With a regular site search engine you can tell it to re-index your entire site anytime you add pages or just want it to and your searches will always be current with all of the pages in your site.

G WILL NOT index your site any faster or better just because you have their search on your site.

If G has not completely indexed your site it's just showing links for people to click on that go to your competitors and they get the sale and you're lucky if you get 5 cents for the click.

Doesn't make much sense to me.

It makes one hell of a leak on your site.

If you do not want to use a php SE another good SE is the Fluid Dynamic SE.

I use it on some of my sites and a php on other sites. I like the php SE better. It's faster.

    http://xav.com/scripts/search/

    PHP http://www.sphider.eu/

They are both free to download and use.

If your site is public and SE friendly all your pages should be indexed. And just because one page isn't indexed, it doesn't mean other pages won't show in the search results.

If your already running AdSense on your site, it is not a leak. Maybe the AdSense click is the sale. Not sure what your site is about.

The cool thing about Google Custom Search, if it makes sense for your website, is that it is free and takes less work to implement than some of the others listed here. It's also maintenance free

I don't use AdSense on my sites.

Again, it doesn't make sense to maybe get 5 cents for a click leaving my sites when I could keep them on my sites and get $20.00 commission for a sale.

I'll take the 20 dollars over the 5 cents anytime.

Seems like common sense to me.

I've tried both Google Custom Search and Sphider on my sites.

Just being search engine friendly does NOT mean that Google has all your pages in its index. It just isn't true. Google indexes pages at its own rate not as fast as you add them (except possibly for high Google PR sites).

Sphider is nice because it will obey your robots.txt and go through you site indexing pages, but I noticed that I could never get it to finish, eventually there'd be an error and it would stop working. I think it would probably work well for small sites or sites with just .html pages (no worries about database connection errors or CPU limit errors).

My content site is a pr5, I currently have 338 pages on my submitted site map and G webmaster tools says 338 are indexed. I don't think I've ever seen a page on my site take more than 10 hours to get indexed. Granted, I am a professional SEO and know how to get the big 3 to index my pages. I guess when I said SE friendly, I mean my SE friendly.

I have also used Sphider and found it to be a good tool

For example my Google webmaster stats show the following for a few sites:

    Example site #1
    Sitemap stats
    Total URLs: 9630
    Indexed URLs: 9297

    Example site #2
    Sitemap stats
    Total URLs: 8564
    Indexed URLs: 6285

    Example site #3
    Sitemap stats
    Total URLs: 28471
    Indexed URLs: 10285

All of my URLs are search engine friendly on these sites however I remember when I first added my Sitemaps to Google webmasters it only added about 100 pages a week and not all URLs have been indexed for either.

Sphider would be great for a site with fewer URLs. I don't remember how many URLs got added when I ran the script, but I think I got past 600 before the errors started happening.

I had no trouble installing it at all. Just download it to your computer. Unzip the files. Load them to your server.

I put all the files in a new folder on my sites.

It never timed out or quit while indexing on my server.

I have it on one site that has 10,000 pages.

    Support forum is here http://www.sphider.eu/forum/list.php?2

    For the Fluid Dynamics SE:

    Just go to http://xav.com/scripts/search/

Click on Automated install. Give it your username and password and it will install it self on your server without you doing anything.

If you're worried about your username and password - change them after it's installed.

I also use it and am very happy. You can easily customize the main search.php page: add your own stylesheets, page coding, etc. You can also insert comment tags to exclude parts of pages that you don't want indexed, such as navigation areas. This helps to considerably cut down on indexing time. The forum is very helpful and the developer responds quickly.

There is a Sphider-Plus with mods incorporated by another developer, however the latest version is 25 euros. The last free version of Sphider-Plus was 1.6, but it's no longer available from the developer. You might find it stashed in a software forum. If you can find it, you should use this version.

Yes, use Sphider-Plus 1.6. It has its own support thread on the main Sphider forum as well.

Realize this is a very old thread but am thinking I might not be the only one who may be trying to come up with a search for their site so am posting in it rather than making a new thread.
*moderators: please feel free to move my post to wherever you'd like, tho if you want.

Seems the sphider site no longer exists (tried all the urls in this thread and none come up with a page for it)

Burgerboy - umm hate to be the bearer of bad news but this means you'll probably be getting an email sometime in the near future asking for help.

I really prefer to not use Google's search cos think of it as a leak, too. Was all set to attempt this Sphider one but am assuming since the site doesn't come up it doesn't exist anymore. So......any opinions on a FREE site search would be very much appreciated?? Probably not possible but would very much prefer it to be computer dummy friendly, too.
