    Forum Contest Ideas
Idea for recruiting members to a forum, or increase member activity.
What types of contests are good for a forum? I already have an idea for a prize (a free one or two-month membership to our service).

The first thing that comes to mind is to have a contest for the user with the most posts in a week or so, but that would promote a lot of low quality posts.

I could also create perhaps some polls on the posts where people can vote for the best answer, similar to Yahoo answers.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks!

As you said, your contest should not focus so much on quantity as it should on quality.

I think that you are on to something with your idea of having other members rate the posts. This could encourage some people who just read your forum to sign up and actually post in it, possibly contributing some very good content. One direction you could go with this idea is having a contest to see who can post the most interesting thead, or, perhaps, the most helpful. With this idea, however, you will have to watch so that nobody creates multiple identities an rates their own posts. An other idea would be to post questions yourself and then be the sole judge who rates the answer.

If you have a very low membership you will have to put some good content in your forum in order to stir people's interests. You can create multiple identities yourself and start some good threads or you can enlist the help of family members and friends to do this with you. Another option is Pay-Per-Post. In this scenario, you pay others so much per post to get some posts rolling. I have heard mixed results concernig quality in the Pay-Per-Post method, however.

If you want to increase membership, you can try giving away a prize meerly for signing up. The prize, of course, would not be a very expensive one on your part, in fact, it should be free or very close to it. Think along the lines of a helpful e-book or report.

It's a little hard to give suggestions without knowing your subject. Forums with subjects that people are passionate about will grow. Other light weight forums will probably not. If you're building a social type forum, you've got a huge amount of competition.

So re-think basics. If there is potential for growth due to subject matter, promote it like crazy. Otherwise contests or offers will probably not yield any long term results.

    Hi Ed,

Thanks for the reply. It's a real estate forum.

    Thanks!

contest don't increase members for the long run just short term.

I have done contest that have given away over 100,000 in prizes and once the contest was over traffic died.

The size of a prize is not a important as its relevance to the people you are trying to get to join in. As it appears the subject is real estate perhaps you could have a grand prize of an appraisal or a Texas Instruments BA Real Estate Financial Calculator, that sort of thing. Make sure the forum is ready to lock and load before you advertise a contest. By that I mean do you have moderators who are experts or at least VERY well versed in the field? If not perhaps you should try to recruit some of those people first.

the prize doesn't matter once the contest is over people will forget about your site. If contest kept users then every website would throw them.

When's the last time ABW had a contest? It's the comunity that keeps the people, contest just brings them in. If you have no community to keep those people those people will vanish as fast as they arrived.

No doubt. It is ye old which came first the chicken or the egg deal. Real Estate is a subject many people are interested in. What is needed is to get them there AND keep them there. If you have expert moderators and some interesting lead off topics AND make sure that people have to post at least once in order to enter the contest it MIGHT help get the ball rolling.

Agree with HG. Go search webhostingtalk for all the forum contests from a year ago (they seem popular their along with pay to post). Then see how many of those forums are still running?

Forums are basically - Social Networking 1.0 - you hang there because of the people and the information. If you meet the people in real time, you are more likely to hang out for longer. In addition, the forum has to have some relevance for you. Usually, the more relevance, the more the people are 'just like you' or close enough for artillery.
