    Power of the Blog...
I'll just say here and now that I'm blown away by the power of blogging. I always figured that any blog I'd put up would only be lost in the shuffle. But I went ahead and set one up, mainly out of the necessity of getting Affiliate Trust up as soon as possible. WordPress has been so touted as the blogging platform of choice around here that I opted in. It was easy [and quick] to get the site up, but I had to compromise a few things to work within the CMS provided by WP.

If you don't enjoy writing, don't open a blog site. It will be a drudge and you'll soon lose interest and go do something else. Not me though. I'm loving it! Google is loving it too. Because blogs necessitate timely exposure of newly posted articles, G pays special attention to blogs. I found that SE exposure was virtually instantaneous [in SE indexing terms]. And it seems that G tends to place blogs higher in the SERPs. Of course the link in my ABW sig helped, but some of that newly found traffic was organic, and therein lies the power. Blog posts are easily found and people take notice and pay attention. They begin coming out of the woodwork. The CEO of TrialPay posted a rebuttal comment in my most recent article about affiliate programs utilizing their new and wonderful marketing method. When people like that sit up and notice, you realize the power of the blog.

Ed ... Blogs are definitely worth the effort and then some ... you can have a global business in a heartbeat for hardly any cost at all.

If you target your blog to real niche markets and to 'hot' products if you are selling and then spend a few bucks to promote you blog to a general audience as well as the niche, the traffic just keeps on keeping on ... if you get 200 to 500 readers per day you probably have more readership than most print media trade magazines.

If your niche is news or trade oriented nich that sort of thing ... you can build an audience pretty quick if you buy some general traffic - kind of like if there are 100,000 in an group of people, some of them will probably be interested in what you are discussing. The more people who read a post, the greater the chance they will come back for another look - if you provide something they deem worth it.

Unless you are trying to be a 'daily' info hog, doing two good info rich posts per week one say on Monday and on Thursday seems to work real well.

There are some good blogs I just stumbled upon that if the person running the thing would spend a few bucks one time and buy some traffic, they would seed the thing with enough pollen so to speak to grow a whole praire of readership.

Glad you are enjoying the blogging Ed. I have enjoyed reading your posts, your insights, and findings about this industry.

Using WP definitely helps since they have so many plugins to make it more social
http://forum.abestweb.com/showthread.php?t=114606 and to spread the news. Some of these plugins make it easier for people to forward the posts through email, digg, stumble upon, etc. I also love the automatic upgrade plugin that I first heard about from Gary.

Pingomatic.com is partly responsible for the magic of WP. No need to sit and wait for crawlers to come to you anymore

Blogging is wonderful in attracting people but even more importantly for a merchant is the importance of dialogging with ones customers. Add to that the sheer enjoyment of communicating and learning from others and you have an excellent reason to get into blogging. Of course you are also correct in that if you do not enjoy writing than you won't do it frequently enough and the blog will begin to stink like 3 day old fish sitting without ice or refrigeration.

In the past, more than once I accidentally accessed the site with .com rather than .gov. Guess what whitehouse . com was? A porn site! I see that's now changed...

I heard that many elementary school teachers found that out the hard way too...

LOL in the UK we had this terrible Do-Gooder called Mary Whitehouse who made it her business to go around governing everyone else's business and loudly proclaim how immoral and irreligious it was to do anything which smacked, however vaguely, of fun.

I'm sure she went home at the end of the day and sat on a spike because the decadent self-indulgence of resting your butt on a chair was the devil's work.

    She was pretty widely despised.

I wonder if someone registered that porm site in her name.

Has it? I also accidentally made that mistake years ago. I am afraid to look now since we are all sitting at the dining table doing homework with the kiddos . But if they did, what a relief! Wonder how much money changed hands, if any?

Yeah. It's political news now. I didn't want to post about it until I had checked...

Blogs are nice but do you have to have your own domain?

It's preferable but not required. There are existing blog sites where you can set up an account and blog to your heart's content...

I liked the title of this thread, so I thought hey why not see if it's taken. Yep, poweroftheblog(dot)c*m has been registered since 2005.

(Now that I've got a sweet Nokia N95 8GB , I've been doing that kind of thing a lot wherever I am. )
