I highly recommend WordPress, and it's free. There are many templates available. Some have built in AdSense capabilities.

I second that. Go to http://wordpress.org for a complete solution. I have used B2Evolution in the past, but prefer WordPress a whole lot more.

Nothing is better for a blog-format than WordPress. Joomla is better for a magazine/grid style layout out-of-the-box. Of course, if you don't mind editing your template files you can do the same thing to your home.php (template file) using the WordPress API and some creativity.
You can stick any javascript (like adsense) or extra php you want in your wp template very easily or you can use plugins to do the same thing if you really want to.

    Thanks for the advice
    Wow,

so many people prefer Wordpress. thanks ,will try it.

Anyway, later on, can we submit affiliate links in the wordpress platform?

I read some posts about "how to make money with blogging", most of them recommend contextual advertising (like adsense, adbrite, text link ads), and not affiliate business .

    Don't quite understand about this.Maybe I'm wrong.

    Thanks and cheers,

That's just semantics. Those are also affiliate marketing methods. A lot of people push adsense because all they have to do is got someone to click a link to get paid. But it takes many many many many clicks on adsense links to make much money.

Contextual links (not adsense, but regular affiliate product type links) within the text of the blog are quite effective in promoting products.

If you want blog, forum, video, social network type features, I recommend Ning.

You can build a social network for free and then it is $5 per month to use your own domain name and $25/month to use your own ads.

Not too familiar with Ning. I've tried to look at it a couple of times, and couldn't really get much solid info without either signing up to create an account or joining someone's already existing network. Maybe it's just me.

I do know you can use WordPress very effectively to do "blog, forum, video, social network type" things with the multitude of free plugins and features available.

But, Ning might be a good idea. I don't know.

I think Snib or Trust or someone around here gave Ning a pretty thorough try and wrote something about it. You might search the forum here and get information about Ning that way.

Important note: you need to host WordPress yourself if you want to include affiliate links. Wordpress.com will most certainly reject your pages with affiliate links. However, hosting it yourself is pretty simple if you get an account at HostGator. Their Baby Croc is like $8/month for unlimited domains and you can install WordPress very easily using the included Fantastico/CPanel tools.
