    Some of Bluehost is down
SOME Bluehost servers are down due to a broken air conditioning unit. The servers are offline since about 7:00 AM Eastern. They have called in a repair crew but no work has started as of 10:00 AM Eastern. Their outlook is at least for the next few hours they will be offline.

Thanks for the information. I have 6 sites and several e-mail accounts that are dead in the water.

I just now received a note from Blue Host about the AC unit failure and the servers being shut down. No estimate on time to restart.

    Post Script.....
    We are back on line...........................

They are back online as of about 12:40 Eastern. Server logs should show the amount of time offline.

Such outtages are the least of my Bluehost concerns. Those can happen to anyone. I have domains hosted there and at Dreamhost, TierraNet, and others, and of all the hosting companies I've ever used only Bluehost has this anomalous setup:

ALL errors that occur across all accounts on a given machine there are logged to a common error log file which is available to all account holders on that machine.

I learned of this in the Bluehost forums, and it was such a strange decision I wrote their Tech Support for confirmation. In their confirmation they didn't seem to find it strange at all, and I've had a difficult time getting their Support staff to recognize the security exposure this presents.

If you limit yourself to prefab scripts they provide the security risk can be minor, but if you do any custom programming then hundreds of strangers can see the details of any weaknesses in your system that would result in an error.

I've requested that they reconsider this unusual configuration, adopting the more conventional -- and much more secure -- setup in which errors are logged in a separate file for each account, which would of course only be available to that account.

It took nearly half a dozen emails back and forth just to get the issue elevated to someone in a position to consider changing their configuration. I haven't yet heard back on that.

In the meantime, I've migrated all serious development work to Dreamhost which, like every other host I've used, keeps my error logs away from strangers.

If this is of interest to anyone here I can post what I learn from whomever at Bluehost my request has been forwarded for review.

I have thought it was weird that I see other domains' errors, I would think they would want to isolate errors to their owners' logs only.

It's bad to see BlueHost down, but every company will try going down, nothing is perfect 100%!

When a host tells me it's a regional or local (to me) issue, I go on IM and ask someone from another area to let me know if they can see the site(s). Then I know if they were blowing smoke or not and can act accordingly.

That is really disturbing that BlueHost would allow all users to see the server error logs! It's not that hard to separate logs by user and only allow access to those that should be seeing them.

No, not a sales pitch. Sorry if it came off that way -- just kind of surprised at the lack of privacy.
