Had to go over Granny's house today to fix her computer. She said there were all kinds of 'things' taking over her computer. Once there, I discovered she had 653 cases of scumware and spyware on her computer. She had 4 sex search toolbars and sex site pop-ups were popping open every 5 seconds. They all had animated sex gifs depicting various acts. Her home page was a sexual pantheon featuring a plethora of deviant choices. I kept deleted stuff and it kept coming back.

Finally I used Spybot Search and Destroy and was able to exorcise these demons out her computer. I just ran it on my computer and it only found a few things of a religious nature that had snuck on to my computer..

ROLMAO ...next time just bring her a case of batteries, wine and some dark sunglasses. Sure hope she didn't have the 'puter at the nursing home. Before my Grandma died her vocabulary slipped into mostly 4 letter words due to Alkeizmers. Funny how those are buried deeper then the school taught words.

The sad thing is - can you imagine how many people have given up on the Internet because of these parasites?

And Microsoft is ONLY NOW considering patching up the holes in it's security model.

Sigh.

Hi All,

LinkAdage, glad to hear your Granny's comp is a bit more cleaner My Aunts has the same problem. I was able to quarentee I believe some of the files that so far have stopped the pop-ups but the files keep loading into her favorites and I can see alot running in the background with a control-alt-delete Anyways, If I get a chance this weekend I am going to try and clean up her computer as much as posible using whatever it takes. One of the worst offenders right now is the Casino-on-net pop ups.

I'm looking for program that will take care of all the scumware, spyware and anything else. Any recommendations as to which one is the best and will also get rid of the Caino-on-net one. I've been reading around here and searching the internet but figured the best answers are here. It's exactly like Drewbert says
quote:
The sad thing is - can you imagine how many people have given up on the Internet because of these parasites?

Thats about where my Aunt is right, ready to give up the comp. It takes forever to boot up, then when it does she gets all the pop-ups and it's another 5 minutes for her to get to a site. Thanks all

Me thinks that both Grannie and Auntie need a stern lecture about going to "bad places" on the Internet.

Zoe,

I did give Auntie the interogation but all the blame was put on the grandchildren After interigating the grandchildren for 48 hours with no sleep, a little water, the shocking and so on, I have to admit I am still clueless. Although my bet is on one of the grandchildren For the casino drive-by no doubt it was Auntie

I was at Granny's house for Christmas and just after boot-up andbeforeopening IE she was getting some new sex pop-ups and those "you may have spyware, click here" popups.

So I updated spybot and ran it and then downloaded ad-aware and ran that. I think her computer is now clean.

Granny is now practicing safe computing with double protection. I like to call it "pill and a rubber protection."

It was bad enough when my parent's browser got hijacked & I had to help them get rid of all the porn, but when my grandparent's computer got infected, that was truly embarrassing!!

Make sure you set all activeX to prompt, and not
enable. This is how most of the crap gets on
your computer. Then you will get a prompt when
you come to a site that uses ActiveX, say NO
to the prompt unless it is a site you can trust.

Cleared my parents computer over the holidays. Found whenu, savenow, gator, more like that, sextracker(neighbor kid, i keep telling my parents not to let others on their computer) found the Klez worm on it, pain to get off, let my brother handle that one. Found out AOL even makes cable connections slow, my dial up was moving around faster.

I feel so bad for people who are just now getting exposure to the Internet, because they often are the innocent victims of all this drive-by download cr@p. After they discover what has happened, it makes it really difficult for them to ever trust other sites.

This makes it harder for honest people to do business, as we have to get past all the bad memories.

And it does seem like Microsoft has been really slow in responding to these issues. So many people leave the default settings untouched, and that allows too much to sneak past, it seems...

I don't know how she would have cleared her computer without my help. All the other able bodied relatives are the AOL dial up user types that check their email once every two weeks. You know, the type"I use a computer all day at work, the last thing I want to do is use a computer at home").

They use computers at work, but without an IT staff to support them they are just about as helpless as granny when it comes to computers.

Linkadage, Check Granny's start directory for the sex one. After Ad-aware went through and cleaned almost everything up I still found that one hiding in the start. Do an explore and it might be there. It did manage to get rid of the otherr 99 copies of it though/ All in all it removed over 740 files and so on

Yep, parasites are a royal pain. I run my own computer repair service and see many many problems attributed to the likes of both parasites and viruses. I’ve seen computers so badly infected with parasites they wouldn’t even boot. I always try to educate my customers on how to avoid parasites and viruses.

Another area to watch for parasites is your “Add Remove Programs” list in the control panel. I’ve found that people will click “Yes” to just about any pop-up that appears and have loaded parasite programs. If your pop-ups and redirects keep appearing after you’ve deleted files and registry entries, check the Add Remove Programs list.

Andy is right…the people just starting in computers are getting hammered the most. What also bites is that some of these folks are really bitter with their computing experience and find it necessary to chastise us computer weenies as the cause of all their problems (in some ways they are right).

Death to parasites!
