I sent an email to a very popular merchant to see if they had an affiliate program. I couldn't find any information on their site nor have I found them at CJ, Linkshare or the like. This is what I got back from them:

Please send your request in writing to the following address:
(insert snail mail address here)
If you need further assistance, please reply to this e-mail or call anytime.
Thank you for your interest in (merchant name).
Sincerely, (etc. etc.)
In writing? Is this strange or do alot of merchants handle things this way? I think if they had an existing program I would have been forwarded to a application page or something similar.

They probably outsource their customer service, and the outsourcers suggest any (for them) 'unusual' requests (ie anything that doesn't have procedures laid down) be sent in writing to the main company.
