Zazzle Steals from it's NYC Customers
Not sure if this is the right place, but Zazzle is stealing form it's NYC Customers.

In NYC there is no tax on clothing.

However on a 45.45 purchase they slapped me with 5.64 in tax. 8.375% of 45.45 is 2 dollars less than 5.64.

I had a 5 dollar coupon which brought the price down to 40.45 (the taxable amount).

However i had to pay an image conversion fee of 20 dollars (which isn't taxable because it isn't being shipped to NY it's being placed in an Image bin on their website).

Total order was 65.45 only 40.45 of which was taxable.

If you are in NY or NYC for that matter and order from zazzle and you just ordered clothing, make sure they don't tax you more than what they are supposed too.

Are you sure you want to accuse them of stealing?

This is an example of a company that is charging sales tax instead of dropping affiliates, BUT because of the complexity and convoluted sales tax districts in NYS they are doing it wrong. Some of their items are taxable in some parts of the state and some of their items are not.

I don't think it was intentional, I think it is a result of their tax accounts not loading the tax tables properly.

I called it theft because after explaining to them that there isn't tax on clothing they refused to refund the money.

That's not good. The tax department won't like them collecting tax that then doesn't get paid to the state.

That assumes that they're not passing the cash over to the state. I live in a rural area outside a city, but my bills for various utilities get charged city sales tax, as do a lot of my online purchases, just because of the zip code. Unfortunately, we probably have a lot more of this to look forward to.

They need to make the changes to their cart though to be in compliance with NYS.

If more states continue with this tax initiative, online consumers are gonna get very irate over this, not to mention vendors getting phone lines jammed with calls. Am surprised there isn't more mention of this "overcharge" tax issue in NYC media. Or has there been?
