Is that bad for my business? Could I be losing profits by having the Alexa tool bar on my browser?

    <BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR>In a word: Spyware.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

It's hardly spyware if it's upfront about it.. the main purpose of the Alexa toolbar is to gather information about visited sites, which is how Alexa works.

It *used* to be spyware, in that it didn't make these things clear. Alexa lost a class action lawsuit on that one.

The Alexa toolbar is harmless.. however, I think the Google Toolbar is much more powerful, and the PageRank indicator is really useful in affiliate marketing. In fact, the Google Toolbar is the only reason I stick with Internet Explorer, if they had the full version for Mozilla I'd swap.

I have the Google toolbar AND the Alexa bar, combined I think they are a useful tool.

Recently the Alexa bar helped me spot a spoof site as the traffic stats on the bar were in the millions rather than like this board in the 1,000's. Made me think.

Hmm, my Avant Browser does not support Alexa. I hope they will in the future!

I like the alexa toolbar, I use it to gain info on sites and to visit similar sites (which aren't always relevant).

I havn't seen any change in the spyware aspects of their toolbar except that it spelled out (and capitalized) in their privacy policy.

    In part:
"IF YOU HAVE AN ACCOUNT ON AMAZON.COM AND AN AMAZON.COM COOKIE ENABLED, YOUR SEARCH RESULTS WILL BE TRANSMITTED TO AND LOGGED BY AMAZON.COM AND MAY BE CORRELATED BY AMAZON.COM WITH ANY PERSONALLY IDENTIFIABLE INFORMATION YOU MAY HAVE PREVIOUSLY PROVIDED TO AMAZON.COM.

Call it what you will, I see no benefit to having it on my computer and don't care to have Amazon logging any of my activities. You can have it.

I used to have it installed on my work PC, but it seemed to cause problems, so I uninstalled it. Unfortunately, while the bar is gone, it now calls my Google bar the Alexa Bar and to turn off the Google bar, I have to uncheck the Alexa bar... very strange...

IMO Alexa is so much BS. I used Alexa for about four months and liked to keep track of my site rankings compared to everyone else. I thought it was pretty cool. Then I found out how easy it was to manipulate the rankings. After reading what others said I ran some tests and had my “newbie” site ranking in the top 60,000 sites in no time. IMO you can’t rely on their rankings. Too easily manipulated. The toolbar itself doesn’t do much for you and I don’t like anyone (even if they disclose it) tracking what I do on the WEB.

I am actually placing different stuff on different systems. Makes for interesting tracking.

I love ALEXA and GOOGLE bars.

I've said it before, but Mozilla Firebird is just too cool to waste time with IE.

Like Dynamoo said, the Mozilla version of Google toolbar doesn't display PR, but it's a small price to pay for getting rid of banners, popups, and BHO Spyware. Besides, it's so extensible that they will probably add the PR feature soon. (Maybe I'll add it myself...)

Haven't used Alexa in years, so no comment. But I want to give a hearty "third" to the comments about Mozilla Firebird.

STILL -- I often use Avant (a "shell" for IE that uses tabbed browsing and is faster than IE) -- for the simple reason that some of the merchant sites and tools DON'T WORK with Firebird or Mozilla. Specifically, the PSC used by many of the ABW mercants won't work fully in Firebird or Mozilla.

Sure wish they'd make the PSC and the page creator used by Amazingsocks.com (is it the same as the PSC? I don't think so) Mozilla compatible. Sigh.
