    Are they cookie stuffing?
I have found the following URLs on a forum:

    http:// frmsmily.appspot.com/s/happy.gif
    http://www. hostingimages.info/user1/sper.gif
    http:// photosnag.com/img/1856/y08m1110mhmd/2.gif

All 3 are highly suspicious to me, but when I load them and look at the headers, I don't see anything related to cookies - nor do I get prompted to accept any cookies in firefox when enabled.

Am I missing something, or what's going on here?

    Thanks for all help!

And why are links to images 'highly suspicious' to you?
Stop blaming the parasites, low return days, cookie stuffers, networks, lousy AMs, and TOOLBARS!

Funny, you ask if the images are suspicious yet post live links to the images.

My basic philosophy ... have a large smiley collection disallow any foreign smiles because the images may not have something today, but they probably will another day if you don't' control it.

Each is from a different user, and they are displayed in... 99% of their posts

We can't just disable images at all... we have a huge number of legitimate image embeds in posts... its not something we can disable. I know that this pretty much rules out possibility to actually block/prevent this from happening.

But those are the URLs to the images in their posts. So when I load up those URLs with applicable tracking/monitoring, I am not seeing any cookies... but my gut tells me all 3 are being used for this sort of practice!

I didn't say disable images, I also said how to prevent it. Re-read.

Thanks. Will take it into consideration.

Is anyone able to help me verify if these are in fact cookie stuffing though? Would just like to know

Some context about why you think they're suspicious would've been useful.

I think the first one is safe... Appspot.com is one of Google's services, and the user is using that URL to post a smiley that he likes that isn't available on your forum.

The other two are pretty suspicious though. The third one could definitely be a setup for cookie stuffing, and the second one may be as well. I'll send you a PM on RFD.

Thanks to all. Just an update:

All 3 users with those image links have been banned. They were "laying the groundwork" to later actually turn on the cookie stuffing. We also caught 2 other people who were actively cookie stuffing.

Wish there was an easy, non-majorly-resource-intensive way to stop these guys!
