That should be OK. When I was 22/27, like most folks at that age, I knew absolutely everything, therefore I had some ground to loose before it became a problem. It has taken me until my last marriage to find out that I really did not know squat. The way that I found out is that my wife told me so.

Uh, 22? 27? I know I must've been those ages once, but I can't remember that far back to be sure.

The question becomes, if "our mental abilities begin to decline from the age of 27", how old were the scientist that did this study and came to this conclusion?

If they were over the age of 27, and odds are they were, their mental abilitis are declining, so, I wouldn't take what they say too serious.

How can 22 be the peak if the decline starts at 27?

If 22 is the peak, then the decline starts at 22. Here is a case where that worthless business calc course could come in handy. Relative maximums occur where the derivative = 0, i.e. at the "peak".

I think we assume that the study is wrong and that we reach out peak at 75. I still have quite a ways to go. That's how I'm doing it anyway.

Way to Go! As they (who??) say, "75 is the new 40." I like that, and I'm sticking with it.

Personally, I'm not allowed to decline or "grow old" until my wife tells me I can. Or, to share her standard quip -- "No, you aren't getting old, dear. I'm two years older than you, and I'm not getting old yet, so you're not allowed!!"

No, no, no. Old age starts when:

    1) Your eyeglass ion is changed to bifocals or trifocals
    2) You're scheduled for your first colonoscopy
    3) You start wearing sensible shoes because your feet hurt when you wear fashionable shoes
    4) You notice that the government is giving driver's licenses to 12 year olds
    5) You can't stay awake late enough to watch the 11 o'clock news, never mind Saturday Night Live
    6) You're losing hair where you want hair and growing hair where you don't want it

I could go on, but I'll close with one final caution: all this happy crap will occur soon after you turn fifty. Enjoy!

All I know is the elderly are far more physically fit than the young.

I've never heard of anyone young making over the hill.

That must be one heck of a hill to climb.

When the young Jack and Jill tried to climb it, they tumbled right back down.

But the elderly, just head right on over it.

Outstanding ... What a great explanation why old guys should hang out with 22 year old women ... Could Hugh Hefner have been right for all these years?

The report states that abilities based on accumulated knowledge, such as performance on tests of vocabulary or generalinformation, increase until at least the age of 60.
This report is based on test-taking abilities, good for the young-uns in college memorizing wads of information. To me, their definition of cognitive ability is rather limited in scope.

Just wait until those 20-somethings face the real test: the test of LIFE!
