Given the lack of positive response to some of the other "specialty" domains (.pro .travel .mobi), I am not too impressed with .tel.

I haven't looked closely, but it appears that they are (initially) pricey and must be registered for a three year term. Maybe some of the "big" outfits or organizations will go for them. e.g., Verizon.tel, Bell.tel, William.tel

Hmm. Good old "John Q. Internet Surfer/Shopper" me, I would see the ".tel" and not have a clue about why or what it means?? By looking at the stuff on that website linked to about the .tel, I assume they're playing on "telephone"? But contemporary "telephones" and other portable communications devices are so WAY beyond anything most people automatically associate with "telephone" -- I seriously doubt most folks get that connection.

Or maybe it's just me? (Argh -- "William.TEL" is just too much, Bill.)

I think MOBI did catch on but the traction is slower.

There are a few big aff pushing .MOBI mirror sites and some of the news channels are pushing the MOBI too. Not going to overtake the .COM any time soon but it will as everybody is going mobile.

There to take the charge is the Japanese market which is light years ahead when it comes to mobile/cell phone.

Really hard for me to garner any excitement over this one, too. Majority of internet users don't even know there are extensions outside of .com / .net / .org

Throw that one into the pile with:

    .aero
    .coop
    .museum
    .jobs
    .mobi
    .travel
    .pro
    .cat

Some others that have been proposed...

    .mail
    .post
Salty kisses, Sandy toes, and a Pirate's heart...

Yeah, Eric. I've got a couple dozen pretty good .mobi names - but I am still awaiting the "excitement." I have a couple developed and they actually sell a few hotel reservations in my main niche areas. One is a "mirror" of the business directory from one of my main niche sites. It has a few hundred directory (business listing) pages and gets a couple hundred visitors per day - mostly from mobile devices.

I also have a couple of cool three-letter ones that I may develop and promote - with the intention of selling them (hopefully, eventually, maybe, who knows?).

But I do not think I will dabble in dot-tel. I've got way too many things on my plate.

We don't *need* .mobi and most people don't know they even exist. I agree that most of the "specialty" dots aren't going to catch on...

.tel isn't for websites, just personal info: http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/12/03...-costs-10year/

Example of what you get: http://telnic.tel/

IllNever.tel/either. But wasn't something like that tried with the dot.name extension a few years back? Nothing much happened there, either.

ICANN are getting greedy - they know that businesses will be forced to buy more and more domains to cover these useless TLDs.

They have even bigger plans to foist even MORE expensive domains on domains on business owners, but luckily they are on hold for now.

You are so right, it's all about milking dollars from big businesses forced to protect their brand. From the article link you posted:
Big brands believe that hundreds of new top-level domains (known as gTLDs) will do little more than squeeze millions out of major corporations into the pockets of companies running domains that users neither want nor need. Dozens of companies, including Yahoo, Microsoft, Time Warner and CA have claimed that new gTLDs “would vastly increase the costs associated with defensive registrations” with “no evidence to suggest a compelling demand for the expansion”.

according to reports they only got 100,000 registrations the first day so it doesn't look like it's going to be a hit.
