Sherpa Article Encouraging Use of Toolbars
MarketingSherpa sent an email today with the subject line reading, "Keeping your true fans engaged with toolbars." The article doesn't really say anything new or surprising, but they used a familiar individual as a source. Access to the article is free for non-members through through April 2. http://www.marketingsherpa.com/article.php?ident=31144

I was just going to post this, also. Not quite sure what to make of it. On one hand, there ARE plenty of sites/affiliates using Toolbars that are actually helpful and non-parasitic. On the other hand, one of their examples is exactly the sort of thing we are trying to work against.

Sherpa hasn't been the same since they were taken over by MarketingExperiments (see http://forum.abestweb.com/showthread.php?t=81259)

I also stopped finding anything they write credible after 6/30/08 when they said PJN was the #5 Network and that their "technology is being embraced and celebrated"

    Source - http://www.reuters.com/article/press...08+PRN20080630
Original PJN article on Sherpa - http://www.marketingsherpa.com/article.html?ident=30684

Regarding the original article - Using Bevan as the toolbar poster child of good practice is nothing but a middle finger to all ethical affiliates and merchants.

"Using Bevan as the toolbar poster child of good practice is nothing but a middle finger to all ethical affiliates and merchants."

    Definitely agree

pssssst one of my affiliate managers following me on twitter (and I followed him back) made some sorta tweet (twit or whatever they're called) that was flattering towards them. Saw it and within a fraction of a second, unfollowed him and thinking about dropping his merchants now, too. (since he thinks they're so great that means I now don't trust him one bit)

So, yeap I find sayin anything at all positive about him as a very big slap in the face. Fair warning to any affiliate managers followin me on twitter now. lol Better watch what ya say. One nice remark bout you know who and I'll unfollow ya. (ummm, yea I know, not exactly any great loss to any of ya lol but ya better not do it if ya wanna stay on my good side. lol )

Didn't realize that Haiko, definitely gonna unsubscribe from their newsletter now that's for sure.

Just wondering, what's the order according to your data? I'm not a fan of PJ, but I'd have to think the list for traditional affiliate networks reads CJ, Linkshare/GAN (not sure the order), SAS, and PJN. If UK traffic is included, you could possibly bring Tradedoubler and Buy.at into the top 5 list, but for US traffic alone, that seems fully plausible to me.

    Joshua,

It was the declaration of "celebration and embracing of their technology" ... it was and still is far from that. There was much more of that hoopla and misinformation in the actual report (as I remember it ... to this day I remember people saying to me WTF is Sherpa thinking? - If I'm not mistaken, I think their data for this came from a Linda Woods poll of her subscriber list).

As for the ranking (if we stay US based and go by # of affs), I can think of a few - off the top of my head -- DirectLeads, DigitalRiver, Affiliate.com, MarketLeverage, AffiliateFuel (now closed), AffiliateFuture (US) and Buy.at (US).
