Has anyone tried selling ad space (actually link listings) to merchants? Our sites are set up like shopping malls, and we frequently receive e-mails from merchants who do not have affiliate programs, wanting to know how they can be listed. We could include them on our pages with the other merchants by selling them a 3 month or 6 month or 12 month ad placement.

    Has anyone tried this?

NO, I didn't charge like that. I just charge per click. But if they are willing to pay I say go for it :-)

If you are their affiliate why charge?

Reciprocal links should benefit both the affiliate and merchant especially with your respective PR rankings (incoming links) etc.

It might be possible to trade through Marketbanker for this, although I've always been a buyer, not a seller.

You can set up different zones for different ads. Not tried it yet though.

I sell some listings. I charge a monthly fee and get paid through paypal. It's somewhat of a pain, but I send emails once a month telling them it's time to re-up. I don't have a lot of companies that do it this way but it's one way to pick up the companies that don't have affiliate programs.

You know... I haven't tried that. I'll have to take a look at that when I get the chance.
    Thanks.

    What Sandra said ...

We have a variety of sponsorships, fixed positions, CPMs and multiple-program bundles & upsells that generate a hefty portion of our revenue. That plus our classified ads more than pay the bills.

Not that more $$$$ would hurt.

Well, once again I've asked for help on this forum, and received some excellent ideas. Thanks to all for your input. I have a feeling it's going to be even more challenging to make money as an affiliate site in 2004, and we're looking at ways to diversify.
