Who has Norton Security on their machine? I need help with some testing.

As you know Norton blocks several different ways. It blocks CJ directly. But it also blocks standard size banners, anything with advertising related words in it and graphics that come from 3rd party servers.

So Norton is not just affecting CJ links, it can be affecting Indies and other networks too. We need to put our heads together to understand how to get around this WHEN POSSIBLE.

EXAMPLE and what I need help testing.

One of my Indie clients went to one of ABW's fav affiliate sites to see how he had placed his ads. The text link that was the header of the ad was GONE. Only the plain text in the body was there. He has Norton Security, so I think that's whats going on. But I couldnt figure out why the text link would be blocked -it did not say anything about advertising.

After further investigation the link is formatted: affiliates.merchant.com/ad/xyz. So I don't know FOR SURE, but I'm afraid Norton is either targeting the word Ad or affiliates or both. Now if we can figure this out...let's say it's just targeting the word ad in the subdirectory of the link then that's an easy fix. We will just rename the directory.

BUT this could help alot of you, not just this one program. If you know what Norton blocks, then you can check your links and let your merchants know if they have any "bad" words in their link structure so they can change it.

I think everyone has focused alot on the Norton/CJ problem because it is so much more obvious, since there are so many people advertising CJ merchants, it's come to light more. But I think Norton could be affecting more links than we realize.

Please PM me if you have Norton Security and would like to help me do some testing. Then I will post publicly what we discover to help you all.

    Thanks,

That is if that is what they are going by of course.

    Linda,

Testing is something I am interested, can I help in anyway? I do not use Norton, but have all my banners running from my server and bring them in as:

    http://www.ssan.com/cgi-bin/bp_468/b...an&amp;page=01

The script I use to rotate the banners is a banner exchange program, in this way I can place banners from anywhere without hosting the images on my server.

Also utilizing a database which creates a special link:
    http://www.ssan.com/cgi-bin/links/jump2.cgi?ID=23663

In this way the engines and such never see the network URLS. The jump 2 takes the link into a frame so the network codes are never seen yet one more time.

That’s how I am working towards a go around Norton SO FAR!

Thanks Sandra, I think that may help some
people, who are techical enough to know how to do what you suggest.

But right now I just need someone with Nordumb loaded to check a link for me and see what's causing it not to show up.

Since merchants have a variety of affiliates, many of whom are not as savvy or techical as you and some others here - I think I need to find out all the things that N blocks and then make sure my merchants minimize exposure to blocking when ever possible. Ist step is simply to figure out if it's blocking the /ad or the word affiliates. Many Spam filiters block the word affiliate and if Norton is is could be a big problem. I think it's just blocking the word ad but need to be sure.

    Linda,
This doesn't help with the immediate question of link text that is blocked, but if you find someone with Norton to test, I'd like to try something.

I just put a few ads on a test page. Each banner link is in its own table cell the size of the banner and each cell has a background jpg consisting of text explaining that Norton or a similar program is blocking content meant to be displayed on the site. If the ad is blocked, the background image should still appear.

I'd be interested in someone with Norton testing it to see if it flies. Anyone with this on their computer can PM me for URL. (Let me know here that you sent a PM, please.)

Found this on the Norton Support pages.

NIS maintains a list of more than 200 HTML strings that are associated with advertisements.

For example, NIS prevents Web pages whose URL includes www.ad.siemens.com from being displayed because the URL includes the HTML string "AD."

In another example, NIS prevents all or part of a Web page from being displayed when the URL includes the HTML string "&banner=" (without the quote marks).

So the /ad in the link I mentioned IS getting the link blocked.

I will try to make time to download the free trial this weekend and get a list of what the other 200 "bad" words are. I will also make some screen shots of how bad pages look when the banners and links are just wiped out.

    Hey Drewbert,

Thanks! I was part of that thread and had been meaning to go find it to re-read the list.
He pulled the list from Norton personal firewall, so I want to pull a new list from NortDumb Internet Security. I'm sure they update the ad blocking definitions, so I want to see what all is in there now.

    Linda,

I loaded the Norton Firewall utilizing their 15-day free trial.

An odd occurrence is taking place:
If you have more than 1 banner on a site to include in-house banners, only 1 banner at a time will work. It actually cracked me up.

I am working on a workaround to this issue, all google ads only show text and you cannot click on them or nothing at all.

As I work on the in-house banners to make them work in spit of Norton, I will let everyone know my results.

Excuse me for pointing this out, but this is a waste of time. What gives Norton the right to block ads on my site?

If I developed a device that would block TV ads, don't you think that the TV Networks would slap them with a lawsuit in 1/2 a second?

Anybody know a lawyer that's will to take a class action suit against Norton? As far as I'm concerned the lawyer can take all the proceeds as long as my ads will show.

Yea Sandra! I did not get time to do it this weekend.

I would recommend testing with Norton Internet Security and it includes the firewall software. IS also blocks referrer info so I think there's a chance it blocks more types of links and banners than firewall does.

I still have this on my todo list and hope to get to it this weekend.

If you can find a work around that would be AWESOME!!!

    A heads up

I have beat Norton on 1 banner now...

Working on getting more than 1 banner to show at a time NOW!

P.S. I wrote to Google and ValueClick and requested a by pass for this issue.

    Sandra,

I took the liberty of sending you a PM with a test URL. I have a test page with text in a background image underneath the ads. I'm interested in what a Norton victim, I mean Norton user sees on this page.

    Thanks.

What I'm most interested in and hoping to test is WHAT it's blocking. If we know that then we can educate merchants to change their links instead of you guys having to jump though hoops.

So if it's blocking text links that have /ad in the URL, then you can get your merchant to rename the drectory.

If it's blocking standard size banners then we get merchants to start putting out banners that are 1 pixel narrower or whatever works.

If it's blocking referrer info because the graphics are passed from a 3rd party server, then merchants need to give you an easy way to serve banners from your own server, etc.

Norton is making me jump through hoops right now.

    It’s all random.

    For instance if you have a random image script on your site 2 banners and then all your content;

    1. Everything shows up

    Refresh

    2. Only 1 banner shows up

    Refresh

    3. Nothing shows up

    Refresh

    4. 2 images show up

    Refresh

    5. Google ad finally shows but only shows text. The ads by is link capable (go figure that one)

    Refresh

And it goes on and on in this random fashion.

So off to the next options - php banner rotators within database. Off to test that option...

    *******Sumary,

Norton is blocking at random scripts not necessarily only terms.

    Hello Sandra,

Thank you for notifying us of the issue you have noticed with the AdWords
ads on web sites. It has come to our attention that the display of AdWords
ads on publisher sites is affected by the use of certain Norton security
products. The effect on ads can include ads with no visible URLs or
    titles.

Specifically, Norton Personal Firewall 2004 and Norton Internet Security
2004 both contain an 'ad blocker' feature. This feature is activated by
default, and will need to be turned off in order to properly view AdWords
ads. Please contact Norton directly for instructions on this feature.

If Norton security software is not installed on your computer, then you
may be encountering an unrelated problem. If this is the case, please let
us know, and we'll investigate your situation further. In order to aid our
diagnosis process, please provide us with as much detail about your issue
    as possible.

    Sincerely,

    The Google Team

    Hi Linda,

I'd installed Norton Personal Security on my wife's iMac to see what it does. Pretty much kills off CJ, that's for sure.

Here's the adblocking list from the Mac - it's stored as an XML db:

Thanks Drewbert! Someone had published that list awhile back but I wanted to see it again to see if it had been updated. Thanks for sharing.

Drewbert and Sandra, is it true that adblocking is already set as the default?

Other affiliate networks are affected too.

    click.linksynergy LinkShare
    bfast.com BeFree
    websponsors.com
    clickxchange.com

But even if it does not block your network and you market primarily Indies, it's still looking for the standard banner ad sizes in your html code. And then you have to be sure the links don't have /ad or/banner or anything in the string. Yikes!

This really stinks. I'm tempted to put up a boycott Norton site and get a bunch of press about how it's hurting webmaster's income. Not just affiliate income because it also blocks all the ad networks like fastclick, valueclick and 247.

    Will this banner work?

    ----------------------

    <table border="2" width="350" cellspacing="4" cellpadding="0" bgcolor="#000080">
    <tr>
    <td width="100%" valign="top"><p align="center"><font color="#FF0000" face="Verdana"><big><u>Notice</u></big></font></p>

    <font color="#FFFFFF" face="Verdana" size="2">Please don't waste your time by going
from site to site looking for that product or link.

We have on this site exactly what you're looking for but, if you don't see it and all you
see is a blank page or a page with out banners or links, then you're a victim of your own
    paranoia.

If you're suffering from paranoia and have the Norton Personal Firewall and Norton
Internet Security installed on your computer, then in order for you to browse for products
or shop online, you must disable the ad blocker feature that the Psychopathology of Norton
enable by default when you installed their RXsofware.

TIP: After you disable the ad blocker, clean all your cookies from your browser and
refresh this page, now to finish the test just click on the links and banners revealed
now, don't worry they must open in a new window now too.</font></td>
    </tr>
    </table>

    Hilarious,

I finally had to un-install that horrible thing. It would not let me work in my databases. Every darn thing I wanted to do it gave me grief. The last straw was it crashed my system.

Not sure how many people are actually using the system, but it was simply a PITA to use. I will stick with my Zone Alarm.

I do believe we need to flood, VC and Google, etc with letters of complaints and request there assistance in stopping this company form setting ad blocks in default.
