Given the unusually long public beta test period for this version I'm surprised the replace issue is there.

I'll look into this right now and see if I can get a fix posted within 24 hrs.

    Thanks for the report.

In the future, you can reach me more quickly by posting bugs to webmerge@fourthworld.com

I was unable to reproduce that one. Could there be a space character or some other character in that field that's not visible?

Good sleuthing. WebMerge relies on the closing bracket to find the end of its tags. That's good for efficient parsing of the template, but bad when you need to actually include a "]" in your find or replace strings.

I'm guessing this survived for all the years since the replace function was added because it's a fairly specialized case, but you need a solution so I just added one: closing brackets in find or replace strings can now be escaped.

So your tag (which also needs a "raw" attribute so it doesn't convert the "<" and ">" to character entities) would be:

    [WM-Field: New replace("[BOLD\]","<strong>";"[/BOLD\]","</strong>") raw]

I just made a custom build for you to test these fixes:

    http://www.fourthworld.com/products/...e251b1.exe.zip

This is the application only, compiled for Windows. To use, just decompress the Zip file and put the app in your existing WebMerge folder.

If this works well for you I'll make complete installers of v2.5.1, but before I do that I want to know about the second item above, whether your field contained a space character. If it doesn't, then please send me a portion of your feed which includes that record to webmerge@fourthworld.com and I'll see if it's a parsing issue.

    Thanks for the report.

No. I attach a sample exported file in txt.

And the template code we use:

We have a lots of BBCODE for formatting text in our records.
    Just like this forum.
Our BBCODE is uppercase, but is also possible in lowercase.
BBCODE is a great solution to store formatted text in a database.

    Dear Richard,

In order that you understand it well, which we need is if we have a field with this content:

    HTML Code:
"La red social Facebook continúa creciendo a un ritmo frenético y ahora rebasa la barrera de los [B]200 millones de usuarios[/B].
A pesar de que en nuestro país es Tuenti la página de este tipo más popular, [URL="http://www.facebook.com/"][B]Facebook[/B][/URL] le pisa los talones con una ascensión imparable desde que se adaptó a la lengua de cada país.
Su creador lo celebra y asegura que están trabajando para llevar el poder de compartir a todo el mundo."
We want that the result is:

    HTML Code:
Note the conversion not changes all non-ASCII characters to their corresponding character entity according to the ISO 8859-1 standard.

This is usual in spanish sites, look at HTML code of this sample pages.
The text of the article not changes:

    Another sample:

    The article code:
    HTML Code:
Lo que muchos intuían podria haber sucedido. Tanto <STRONG>Elsa Pataky</STRONG>

Thanks for the attachment, but going forward please send all bug reports and attachments via email to webmerge@fourthworld.com

Having such reports come into my email lets be handle the tracking of issues much more effectively.

Thanks in advance for using email to send bug reports in the future.

As for this issue, it turned out to be a parsing issue. It managed to survive the last several versions because it only affected files which used quotes around field data and had empty fields but did not use commas as the delimiter. Since most of the quoted values we see are in CSV files, and most pipe-delimited feeds don't use quoted values, it seems no one had come across this before.

Fixing it took only a one-line code change, and the fix is available in v2.5.1b2:
    http://www.fourthworld.com/products/...e251b2.exe.zip

As with v2.5.1b1, this is the application only; just put it in your existing WebMerge folder to run it. I'll make complete installers once these fixes are verified.

No worries - your English is much better than my Spanish (and since I live in what used to be called Alta California you'd think I would have paid better attention in my Spanish class <g>).

Yours is the first request we've had to support BBCode, but I think it's a very useful one.

Rather than further muck around with the WM-Field tag for this, since BBCode uses unique rules it might be best to add a WM-BBCode tag. This would allow us to process the full set of BBCode tags much more efficiently than trying to handle them in WM-Field, and would be much simpler for users like yourself to use.

So I'm proposing that if you have a field whose data is comprised of BBCode tags, you could simply use this:

    [WM-BBCode MyBBCodefield]

...and WebMerge would generate the text according to the rules defined for BBCode as described on that Wikipedia page you cited.

Would that work for you? If so, I may be able to put that into v2.6, coming up as soon as we close out v2.5.1.

    The uninstall is impossible.
One more reason why I hate relying on other people's code.

The Uninstall component is part of Wise Install, which is a generally good installer package but apparently they cut corners with forward-compatible APIs.

I'm sure they have a fix by now, but I've been working on my own installer anyway to both streamline my build process (now that we support three platforms it's a lot of work to make installers), and to simplify the installation experience for the user as well.

For v2.5.1 this may have to remain outstanding as a "known issue" for 64-bit Win systems, but I should be able to put my custom installer in place by v2.6.

If you need to do a complete uninstall in the meantime, WebMerge is fairly self-contained so it's not hard to do. Most everything the program needs is included in the WebMerge folder, with no DLLs or other components installed anywhere else. Preferences are written to a folder in your Documents folder, and the only registry entries the program makes is to associate the .4ww files with the app.

Apparently a bit got flipped during the last update to the InfoCenter. It's now fixed.

InfoCenter components live on my server, so those are quick to address without requiring the user to reinstall anything. You should see that fix in place now, regardless which version of WebMerge you're using.

You should see a red close box in the upper-right of the InfoCenter's Message window.

If you don't please email me a screen shot of the Message Window so I can see what's happening there.

    Yes. It's a great idea.
    I'm waiting for the v2.6.

Look at http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/misc.php?do=bbcode for a list of the standard BB code tags.

Note the BB code usually is in uppercase.

All the other issues (and InfoCenter related) are solved in v2.5.1b2, thanks, Richard

P.S. Unwise.exe is not an important issue.

Richard I have to comment that I've always been impressed at how quickly you respond to user requests and bug fixes and the way you've worked with this user is just another example of how great your support is.

My hats off to you and to Webmerge, it's still one of my favorite applications .

Good to hear. Thanks for verifying those.

I'll put together installers over the weekend and post v2.5.1 on Monday. Any other issues found after that will have to wait for v2.6 or if they're urgent maybe a v2.5.2 (but it's so much work to make builds for all platforms that I'm less inclined to do a v2.5.2 unless absolutely necessary.

Thank you so much rematt and the others here for your kind words.

The work I do doesn't just affect WebMerge; it's not like a drawing program or word processor where you can tip-toe around bugs rather easily without killing your whole workflow.

WebMerge plays a critical role in how thousands of people generate some or all of their web sites. In most cases these sites are money-makers, and often they're the site owner's primary income source. So it's important that WebMerge be reliable to keep those stores in business.

Besides, when you're a webmaster you already have a full-time job dealing with anomalies in IE; you certainly don't need me adding to your list of software gotchas.

My goal with the product is to make sure that 100% of reproducible bugs is addressed with each release. It's not easy to do that, but given the many things folks use WebMerge for it's important to try my best to make that happen.

With the excellent bug reports and feature requests you folks send in, we can continue moving WebMerge forward to be an ever more capable web-building assistant for you.

Note the BB code usually is in uppercase.
No problem on the uppercase since just about everything in our parsing engine is case-insensitive, so folks can use whatever capitalization they like (even rEallY uGlY pATteRnS lIKe tHiS if they need to <g>).

Good news: this morning I wrote the code to support the entire suite of BBCode tags, with the following exceptions:

thread -- specific to PHPBB system
post -- specific to PHPBB system
php -- requires complex syntax colorization subsystem
html -- requires complex syntax colorization subsystem
bug -- specific to PHPBB system
screencast -- how often is this used? Wouldn't YouTube be more useful?

I hope the subset I've implemented will be helpful.

I'd put this in the latest test build and call it v2.6, but I want to deliver the bug fixes ASAP and with v2.6 I'd like to try something radical: encourage folks to test it BEFORE it gets released.

    Deal?

Besides, there's at least one other goodie I want to slip into v2.6, and I haven't finished writing it yet....

    PS:

Performance is a key element in what WebMerge provides. Whenever I can optimize something WebMerge is doing under the hood, it means the program can spend that time doing more complex stuff so the stuff you do is that much simpler.

So when I wrote the BBCode generator this morning, not only did it take only 2.5 hours, but it turns this:
    Code:
    [ b]bolded text[ /b]

    [ i]italicized text[ /i]

    [ u]underlined text[ /u]

    [ s]strikethrough text[ /s]

    [ code]monospaced text[ /code]

    [ size=15]Large Text[ /size]
(The unit of measurement varies with each BBCode variant and could represent pixels, points, or relative HTML sizes.)

    [ color=red]Red Text[ /color]
    or
    [ color=#FF0000]Red Text[ /color]
    or
    [ color=#FF0000]Red Text[ /color]
(Both HTML color names and hexadecimal color values are generally supported, although on some boards, you must omit the # from selecting a hexidecimal color.)

[ font=courier]this text is in the courier font[ /font]

    [ highlight]this text is highlighted[ /highlight]

(Ignore the extra spaces in the BBCode tags above; I had to put those in to prevent this board from rendering the tags -- apparently this noparse tag isn't honored here as it is in WebMerge 2.6.)

thread and post are BBCODE standard used in vBulletin systems:
    http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/misc.php?do=bbcode

bug, screencast and youtube are not BBCODE standard in vBulletin systems.

The code youtube would be very useful, but everyone programmes it to his taste, for example, in our forums is:
    Code:
    <object width="480" height="295"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/{param}&hl=es&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/{param}&hl=es&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="295"></embed></object>
    Sample:
    Code:
The standard BBCODEs in vBulletin systems:
    http://www.3dprofesional.com/foros/m...bcode&langid=1
    The last one is [attach].

[amazon], [googlevideo], [librotecnico], [wikipedia] and [youtube] are our custom BBCODEs.

    Thanks.

I'll consider the video links, but possibly later on after v2.6 since it's so easy to just use the link tools YouTube provides.

It would seem the thread and post tags would be of little value in static pages outside or a vBulletin system, no?
