Big Brother's Internet?
Haven't seen this in the news, and perhaps I missed it, but these 2 new bills in Congress make me very nervous. They are Bills 773 and 778 and may give the federal government the power to shut down internet traffic, regulate what security software is used on private networks and have access to any and all data.

Has anyone heard of these yet? Why aren't they big news? The people who gave us the mortgage crisis, the financial crisis, the recession and spending that is unbelievable now wants complete control over everything on the internet? And they want to certify who gets to work on internet security.

Does anyone have any other info on these bills?

Ouch. One of the article's commenters put it clearly: The scariest phrase I've ever heard is "Hi We're from the government, we're here to help you."

I have no additional info, but just read what you linked. Tampering with "Private Networks" is the scary part. If it is as effective as the TSA it will very likely bog things down without providing any true protection. Scary for sure - and it could affect all of us.

I'm not sure if the internet (as we know it) will be shut down, but I did see this related story,

FTC wants to regulate bloggers and viral marketing

Basically, the Obama Administration thinks the internet is vulnerable and these two bills address the issue. I'm not a big fan of eastern european criminals successfully attacking my computer as they did last month. I hope individuals, companies, and governments are working to make the internet an open and safe place to share information and conduct business. If the effort goes too far or is somehow illegal, then we need to figure out where this is happening and make a fuss about it with the help of organizations such as FreePress.net and many others.

Yes, the monopoly media companies want the internet to become a walled off garden where we can only visit sites we have paid for, but it won't happen because there are millions of publishers and millions of people who want to visit those publishers. People won't be happy being pushed back into an online "cable line-up" type of situation. Won't happen.

Yes, democratic means and the rule of law should be able to prosecute bloggers and spammers who spread malicious information or spyware.

Here's the full text of Bill 773: http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill...?bill=s111-773 (sets up a cyber security advisory panel along with a long list of cyber security related issues)

Here's the full text of Bill 778:http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill...?bill=s111-778 (basically just creates the position of Cyber security Advisor within the White House)

I don't think either of these 2 bills really address the issue. Think about it for a minute. First, everything the federal government does is politically motivated. Not what's good for you or good for the nation but what's good for the politicians.

So now politicians will decide what security is permitted. Politics will now decide how you, your internet provider and your hosting company will secure your online access-these same people who gave us our current financial crises.

What happens when a new threat comes along? Will they act as swiftly as the FDA? Will it takes years to address the threat? Show me one thing our politicians manage well. Instead of innovation we will have more regulation, fueled by politics. The best and brightest won't shine, only those who can contribute a truck load of cash to "political campaigns".

I don't see any good in this. They can't even secure their own servers and access and now they want to secure mine?

The government seems to be fishing in way too many ponds. Where will the little fish swim if big brother fish tries to in every pond. When will the campaign promises of "change" from big government, censorship and anti capitalist stance end? As we know, they are all part of the same corporate entity trying to suck every right and dollar out of the people/slaves. Doth must protest. [B]

What is our first amendment?

First Amendment: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances[U]."

Look at what we have to look forward to over here in the UK. I do wonder sometimes whether George Orwell was a genius, or whether he was a fool who should have kept his ideas to himself...

Greg Rice is correct this will be a big problem and is not a good thing. The control that is on the way will affect us all in more ways than you can possibly imagine. I’m not going to waste my time trying to convince those of you who have blinders on that Greg is correct; you will in time have your blinders torn from your eyes. What we are facing is not socialism where the government runs business, but a form of fascism where business remains private but the government has total control of how it is run.

Regardless if you are willing to accept it or not the evidence is right in front of you if you are willing to take the blinders off. Giving the banks mega bucks that come with mega strings and refusing to let those who want to pay it back do so in order to maintain the control. Bail out the auto industry with the goal of total control right down to firing a CEO. There are more examples but you getting the idea, but I could give you the quote of the day. “Wall Street is not going to play as dominant a role in the economy as regulations reduce "some of the massive leveraging and the massive risk-taking that had become so common," President Barack Obama says.

If for one minute you think that total control over the net and its content is not a goal of the Gov. than you really do have your head in the sand.

Right on, Trying to Win.

Here's an example of a potential excuse to control the internet. http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology...rbon-footprint

We must stay vigilant and observe such potential trends.
