Todd,

Can you explain to me under what specific circumstances a click would have a zero referrer?

zero, or not present?

Some Possibilities:

User is using some privacy software and/or proxy or firewall (Zone Alarm, Norton) which kills referrer headers (some anti-ad software does this also.)

Opera user with Prefs | Privacy | "Enable referrer logging" unchecked.

Ways to block referrer in NS/mozilla, and even IE.

Some browsers may not send it with javascript links.

User bookmarks or right click | copy shortcut your affiliate link and then stores or pastes it into another browser.

User clicked on a URL from an https page (Most browsers will not send the referrer header if its https), for example an SSL web based email appliation.

No problem

Also,
I've seen the browser just glitch the referrer header at times for unknown reasons..

An aside..funny story.. I'm talking to a few friends one time in an online chat and I ask them to check out a URL on my site... in real-time i see the hits come in and one has a referrer of some online dating service. I checked the URL and realizing the city/state it was related to I knew who it was and outed him (privately of course).. was amusing.
