Farewell to a parasite: Zango is dead!
There was an article in MediaPost this morning about the death of Zango:

    Good riddance!

    And good riddance too.

Although to be fair, Zango did clean up its act a lot recently. But all that did was drive them out of business. Poor parasite pushers, it's hard to make a decent living isn't it?

This doesn't mean anything. With an existing network of installs, even if new installs are discontinued, there's still a live market for ads on existing installs. Zango would be stupid not to sell off that asset.

I will not shed any tears for them. Back with Onlineshoes competitors who were using them hammered our business. I have seen them plague a lot of folks and steal a lot of commissions from people. Although I will miss seeing the sign when I drive through Bellevue.

After reading Ken Smith's blog, it seems like they'll still be alive and kicking:
FB: Yes, a deal has been done. I'm not sure why anyone at blinkx would say otherwise. I'm not at liberty to disclose the details, and I'm an official spokesman for neither party, but suffice to say that blinkx has acquired all of Zango's assets (though not the corporation itself). It eventually ended up making job offers to most of the former Zango employees.

Sweet news! It's funny that the blame goes to those "rogue" publishers and not the management of Zango. Seems justice finally caught up with them.

Like others, I'm viewing this news with extreme skepticism. Thus far, nearly all the parasite companies turn out to be zombies who return from the grave again and again.

Yes, BlinkX has bought some of their assets, it does say that in the article. But the company itself, has gone under. Let's hope the lawsuits and problems Zango had will linger in the minds of those at its purchasing company...

And I think that BlinkX was interested in some of the technology, not the Zango model. Even so.. it's a company I wouldn't touch with a bargepole and it could well harm BlinkX's reputation in the short term.

Dead? Maybe for a while, but imagine they'll be back alive again sooner or later with yet another coat of paint and a new name

Slightly off-topic, it is interesting to see an admission like this:
Initially, we sometimes used the advertiser's home page as a targeting mechanism, and I'll have to confess, this never struck me as particularly fair to the advertiser. (If the user is already sitting on eBay's site, why should we get a commission if the user happens to make their purchase through our ad rather than their original browser instance?)
Using an advertisers homepage as a targeting mechanism... in 2004 that was 'desktop adware', in 2009 its 'customer service tool bars' and just as immoral.

    (bolding in quote by me)

added: forgot to note this was from Ken Smith who co-founded zango, thanks Adam for posting a link to the blog.

Despite the news of a Zango shutdown or partial acquisition, Zango's software is still operational. I found their software defrauding one of my clients yesterday.

Hello stranger I've been reading a lot of good things about you recently.

BlinkX bought some technology, but as someone said.. doesn't this leave a zombie adware network? Has someone acquired the rest of it?

    How did i miss this?

I think it was the FTC that crippled them. Since the FTC investigation and ruling, they have been ailing.

Zango has already confirmed that their advertiser system is going nowhere, so no need to celebrate.
