I have a small concern about backlinks. Is it likely that a site may trade links with you but have the links page blocked in their robots.txt file so the search engines don't look at it. This gives them a backlink and the unsuspecting website no backlink. While everytime they check the links page, they see a backlink to their site.

If this is a common practice, how would I check for it?

Most all the automated backlink sites do just that. They have no interest in pushing your site up the SERPs.

You can go to a few sites that are linked to and see if the page shows up as a backlink.

You can also view the robots.txt file in your browser like this

I'd think that if a links page was blocked with robots.txt, it'd have no PR since Google wouldn't be able to index it.
