I don't know is this can be done but I have some data that comes up in one column in excel. I want to break it into two columns the data is like this:

    entry, 123
    entry, 456
    entry, 789

Is there a way to get the numbers in the next column instead of in the column with the entry?

A program called CSVdb has an option to split columns, handy piece of software even if it does not solve your problem.

Funny thing you should say! That is why I am back at this thread. Now, I need to combine three columns.

    Help?

I have clicked around but don't see how it is done.

I didn't realize that when I learned to use webmerge, I was going to need to know all this other stuff, too.

LOL!! I found a work around to do it but I had to use notepad, wordpad and excel to do the job! There must be a better way.

I will probably spell this wrong, but it is the concatenate function. Create a new column and add the formula +&(Cell 1)+&(Cell 2)+&(Cell 3) etc. Then take the formula and drag it down the column. Then highlight the column, copy and paste SPECIAL, I am blanking on the term, but paste data results, not formula.

I create columns between the columns I am combining to add content when I am combining information for a new description field for instance.

Hope this helps. I'm not quite awake yet.... (Night Owl)

Post this in an excel field to combine cell Al, any text in quotes, cell B1, cell C1, etc...

    =CONCATENATE(A1, "A text thing", B1, C1)

    -----

Highlight any cell or column, and click the menu item DATA --> Text To Columns

to seperate any delimited text, etc.. either by space, comma, tab, pipe, etc...

    Thanks,

In addition to MS Works (came with computer) I also use Star Office (SUNs' version of Open Office).

Free Open Office can be had from

    http://download.openoffice.org/

or if you prefer to get StarOffice 7 (comes with documentation and SUN support) its available at Amazon for $59.00 with free shipping.

They not only handle excel files but also Access, dBase etc. For those of us that program Basic is built in.
