You can promote them, just be sure to not use their name anywhere on the page. Replace their store name with "John Doe" and it's all good.

Almost as much of a joke as "No search optimization".

With restrictions like those, I'd look for another merchant.

No email marketing and no SEO? you've got to be kidding!

E-Mail Received From a *Clueless Merchant*

Affiliates may not use any marks of (Clueless Merchant) and Clueless Merchant(dot)COM as:
a. Hidden metatext, including keywords, content descriptors, and titles;
b. As search engine keywords or index identifiers;
c. As a wallpaper; or
d. In any type of coding which biases search engines.
I received this from a merchant about 2 weeks after joining their program. Funny thing is that I didn't notice that they also had a 1 day cookie when I signed up. I couldn't drop them fast enough.

Quite simply it means find a different merchant!
And if you are feeling generous, send them an email informing them why, although they probably will dismiss it. The person running this program is perhaps insane since they are asking the impossible. Without PPC, SEO is your only option. Sort of like asking you to inhale and exhale simultaneously.

I sent a email, and I also refferenced this forum thread!

Maybe we are lucky and get a AM reply!

I can understand restrictions, but the 24 hour cookie, that's the topper.
I guess what it all boils down to is, that program is shooting itself in the foot.

I never understand threads like this about "mystery merchants" with obviously idiotic restrictions -- why not tell us who the merchant is? Others out there might be saved some grief it we "outed" such foolish merchant programs.

I can only think of a couple of (mis-guided) reasons why an AM would add restrictions like these. Perhaps there were affiliates abusing their trademark and they over reacted in an attempt to stop the abuse. Or possibly their own SEO efforts were so pathetic that affiliates were consistently ranking higher than them in the SERPs and was causing a bit of embarrassment.

I'm sure there could be additional (misguided) reasoning used to justify restrictions like these and there's no doubt in my mind that the AMs for these programs are absolutely convinced that these were smart moves. I'd be curious to see what effect these changes have on their programs over the next few months.

If this were the case, they should be happy that they have affiliates that can get them SE traffic ...period.

The way I see it is, a generated sale is a generated sale, who cares who brought the surfer. If it was an affiliate, be happy and pay them there % or whatever.

I agree I would like to know the specific merchant we are discussing.

I also understand, privacy is a big part of this forum.

Just pure speculation on my part, I really would like to know the merchants reasoning also. It's possible that I'm completely off base and there's a valid business reason for this move. I doubt it, but I drink a lot.

Correct, since this change in terms was communicated to me via e-mail it doesn't seem appropriate to "out" the merchant on a public forum. However, remember the SEs are your friend.

SO I got a Responce .. from my Email Question:

Good morning,

To clarify the program restrictions, Entertainment will not partner with publishers who drive traffic to their offer via search. You can optimize your webpage that displays advertiser banners, but you cannot promote their offer via a search campaign. Let me know if you need further clarification.

Now ... im wondering .. Search Campaign ??

Must be reffering to PPC eh?

>>Search Campaign

Ask them to clarify.
They must mean PPC.
