Time Warner to spin off AOL
The divorce, announced Thursday, will spin out AOL as a separate company run by former Google Inc. advertising executive Tim Armstrong. He was hired in March to try to restore the luster to a brand once known as America Online.

Best of luck to him. It will take something really impressive to woo people back to AOL. Too many people were annoyed when they brought home a brand spanking new computer only to find AOL software installed whether they wanted AOL or not. Then there were the countless billing issues...

    Terri:

The pre-installed software, IMO, wasn't a problem for most people. The real problem came down to the product and the service, both of which were severely lacking.

I think the billing was one issue as you tried to cancel membership, they did a good job at making you stay with them. Maybe it's props to them for having a good membership retention.

I think their model did not evolve with the time (DSL, cable) and they did not fend off low cost / free providers like netzero. Although netzero is no longer a major player, they had companies like them bitting off at their marketshare.

They should have evolved from subscription based model and move to a marketing based model like Google/Yahoo. They also did not invest in their search. They rented it from Overture, then Google now.
