Go with the brand that you trust.

I am not sure you will get many people with the technical knowledge to give an informed opinion. Not in this forum. I may be wrong though, it happens.

    Hi Julian,

Yes, I thought the same thing initially. However, I'm a very newbie to internet and affiliate marketing only starting my learning curve this last April. I felt people here with their experience and abilities would have some sort of external backup system to facilitate the protection of their own computers and website data.

The resulting poll is from what I learned researching this challenge just yesterday. I knew nothing about this stuff before yesterday, so any insight is greatly appreciated.

    I don't know if I don't ask, right?

Thank you for your thoughts and response.

Which one has the best warranty? There probably isn't much difference between those 4 models, but you need to read reviews of each one to decide which one to buy.

    I have a Western Digital.

I've read many reviews and they are all over the place. I believe it just comes down to personal preference and taking your best shot.

The Maxtor and Seagate FreeAgent both have 5 year parts and labor warranties. However, I learned not to long ago Seagate bought Maxtor.

    Great question, thank you.

LaCie. I had a Seagate Free Agent that died within a week.

Edited to add: I have the Maxtor, but there is no "on/off" switch. I like to be able to turn my externals off.

I have the Seagate and it's been fine since I got it 5 or 6 months ago. You can't turn this one off either. It has a power button but the hard drive keeps spinning after you turn it off (or think you turn it off) so I unplug mine at night.

Last week, I nearly bought a new 1.5-TB USB drive at Fry's Electronics for $129.95. (Yes, that's 1.5 terabytes.) I think it was a Seagate, but I'm not certain.

We currently have four external USB hard disks (ranging from 80GB to 500GB), which we use intermittently for backup AND for portability of image libraries.

I still remember being impressed when Kamerman Labs offered the first 10-MB hard disk drive for less than $1,000. (Yes, 10 megabytes. I think it was late 1983.) Do the math: at $100 per megabyte, one terabyte would have cost $100,000,000. Gosh, prices have come down.

The LaCie has a complete replacement warranty. One of the reasons I bought it. Tired of throwing externals in the garbage They have 2T available, but still a bit pricey. I'd rather have a few 1Ts with redundant back ups for now. With raw camera files I may need to change that fast though, we took over 125 gigs of images in May alone....
