Unhappy Deleting webmerge generated files in Vista ... so slow
    Hello,

Does anybody knows why deleting hundred of webmerge generated files in vista 32bit takes minutes and is so slow?
I removed vista indexing, recycle option, checked for solutions online but it keeps saying preparing to recycle for at least 20 minutes before giving the option to delete.
Is it a Vista problem or the type of file authorisation/permissions given by Webmerge process that create this frustrating problem?
    Any tip help is welcome.

    Cheers,

    Fab

try pressing shift before you choose to delete, then they are not recycled. I have noticed that the recycling is very slow, but quicker if you choose not to recycle the files

    For anyone else reading this:

Open a DOS prompt (Start button > type cmd.exe in Win7 search box or Run > cmd.exe) and then go to the directory containing the WM files and type "del *.html" (or the appropriate extension). This deletes them faster than in Windows.

I haven't tried the Shift+Delete option so I can't comment. Since these files don't go to the Recycle bin, I suspect the speed would be similar.

I find if I keep the files generated in their own directory and then hold down shift and delete when at that directory they disappear without too much fuss. But I'm talking about using the equivalent of the explore view.

I'm using Server2008 which I assume is the same view as Vista.

This is a widely discussed issue with Vista and Webmerge is definitely not the problem. I was recently involved in a project where we were running in excess of 80,000 files using WM and the time to either copy, move or delete those was absolutely incredible. (in a very bad way)

Here is a cool work-around that I found...
If you have never used it, 7-Zip is a free/open source archiving program (zip, rar, etc), that also has a built in file manager.

While the archiving functions are quite good, the file manager is an absolute life saver if you need to copy/move/delete a large number of files on Vista!
Here's the link where you can grab a copy: http://www.7-zip.org

You will be completely amazed just how well it solves the Vista problem!

Good tip, DAC. I've used 7-Zip and find it very handy.
