    I Aged Myself Yesterday
    -sigh-

So, I go into this shop that has all the fancy schmancy photographic imaging equipment, and I say, "Hey, can you convert all of my old slides into digital format for me?"

    -blank look-

    He says, "Slides?"

    "Yeah, you know, slides."

He stares blankly for a minute. "You mean 35mm film?" And he holds up a roll of film.

"Well," I answer, "You know, individual negatives surrounded by a piece of cardboard, that you place into a slide projector."

After a pause, he says, "Slide projector?"

Suddenly awkward, I say, "Oh, never mind, you probably don't have what I need."

Lol, I feel older, and I didn't even have a birthday!

I grew up with those slides, and I am only 40. My parents had thousands of those. I remember those slides very fondly.

I've been working my way through all of my mom's stuff, and every time I go over to sort items into boxes and such, I end up pulling out another box of slides and putting them through a small handheld viewer. She probably had 2k-3k slides of family, and trips, and I want to convert them to an easier format.

Remember slides shows in high school science class?
You had to click the thingy when the audio would beep.
    Never synced up.

I still have slides that I shot years ago - during my high school and college days. Both on Ektachrome and, of course, Kodachrome film, which is being discontinued. Another sign of an era gone by. ***sigh***

Reminds me of the time I brought a movie on tape to someone's house only to find out they didn't have a VCR. I really talked up the movie and had everyone excited about it so it was embarrasing when they realized I hadn't brought a DVD and we wouldn't be able to watch the movie.

    And time marches on.

Yeah, I'll bet we've got 2,000-3,000 slides we took from when we got married (1967), through the birth of our kids (1973 and 1975) and right up through their childhoods back in the 1980s and even 1990s.

Now I'm not hopeful of ever getting those put on more reliable media. Think I've heard of slide trays or holders you can fit to a scanner, though. Maybe that's an option; scan 'em and save 'em on CDs? (Or DVDs?)

Years go by so fast ....

Reminds me of sitting in the living room 40 years ago with my family as a young boy, watching slides of European vacations and my parents affinity for catching us 3 boys in action.

Families just don't spend time together like that much more.

    off topic:

Sitting around our stereo that was big as a bus and listening to Simon and Garfunkel, Tiajuana Taxi, Herb Albert albums.......

    Good Times. Great Memories

Worst slide related memory: Brought my high school prom date back over to introduce to my mom so she could get a picture of us. In the meantime, mom had set up the screen and had slides ready to show her of our family, our trips, lol. Mortifying, at that age. Definately a deer in headlights moment.

This guy sounds like an idiot.
Any pro printer still knows what to do with slides.
If it's any consolation, I still work with BW film and i am 28 years old...

OK, sure, we're all getting older, and it's no surprise to encounter a household with no VCR.

But you're talking about "this shop that has all the fancy schmancy photographic imaging equipment" -- if their staff doesn't know what a slide is, you need to turn around and walk out, and find a real store.

Let me guess: it was the local outlet of a national chain that employs lots of slacker teens at $9 per hour, after training them (for an hour or two) how to run the big photo-printing machine?

I reckon you could buy the equipment you need to do this online to transfer these slides onto your computer. I don't think it's that expensive. Probably worth a look online.

8 tracks, remember them well and Daddy had all the pictures on slides as well. Remember setting up the big screen to watch the slide show.

Remember playing on the CB radio after a few too many beers also.

Also remember the foil on rabbit ears. And when remote control TV was really a remote with a wire attached to the TV. Or being the remote control when Mom/Dad said to change the channel!

I still have some videos on BETA.
I wonder whether they will still play.
I don't fancy my chances of getting my hands on a working beta player.

My Epson scanner can handle slides. If they are all family images there are places online (I think Arizona Scanning was one place I looked at a few months ago) or buy a scanner and hire a teen to scan them for you.

I might do that this summer myself. I'd rather have someone here scanning my negs/photos than sending them out to possibly never be seen again....
