How Does Wikipedia Monetise Their Traffic ??...
    Hi

So how do they ? I know they are a non-profit. Is it ALL donations perhaps ?

MODS: Move this if you think it's in the wrong place.

    Thanks !

Yup, all donations and no on-page monetization at all. Conspiracy theorists may speculate otherwise though.

It seems silly really. Running something like Adsense would bring in a decent revenue and retain editorial independece, but that's not on the cards.
Innovative advertising with Slimeware Corporation and Telephore. Mail-order fuel with Petrol Direct.

I was reading a mag earlier this year saying that they are still seeing red ink every month.

    The biggest cost, bandwidth.
    I am not suprised though

They should really implement a site search by Google - They could make some money off of ads, and it would be many times better than the search feature they currently have.

    Wait and watch..

They, like craigslist, will figure something out and be bazillionaires.

No way to have the search engine placement that they do and not be able to monetize it.

    Jimmy,

Craigslist makes a profit ... could make a bunch more ... but stop giving them ideas.
Come September they will have a competitor ... ME.

And the affiliate program - which will be run thru Clickbank - will make anyone who
can walk and chew gum at the same time a check every two weeks.

We will see what you can do with JUNK TRAFFIC ... hehehehe ... we will see how junky it really is come the last week in August.

Get your product, service or website text ad seen by 1 million REAL people per month.
You can be the only banner on the page for $10K per month. Geico spends more than that everyday on TV ads.

    Let the games begin.

I see a few problems with your post - 1. You think you can become a viable competitor to Craigslist, and make money at the same time. 2. You mentioned Clickbank. 3. A banner ad for $10k/mo? You must be mad. A banner? Seriously?

Yes! If we just focus on making money we'll become consumed by it. I really appreciate what Wikipedia has done and represents. Building websites isn't just about making money and those who realize this tend to have more successful websites.

Imagine how much they would make if they added just one adsense block per page
