One of the site I run is the Cow Dance. Cow cows dancing to music. Anyway, its a cute site with nice graphics. I use it as content for my other sites. People link to the graphics all the time. They don't know better. They think bandwidth on the internet is free. So every 2 weeks, I have to change the name of my graphics, if I don't I'll go over my month bandwidth allotment.

I put the reight click disabler on my site, and it helps. It doesn't cure the problem. So, I'm looking through my logs at who is stealing my bandwidth and I always go to the site. If the site links back, I don't change the graphic.

So, I go to this site where one of my images is, and I right click it, and it says something to the effect that all images on this page are copyrighted. The moron knew what he was doing is wrong, he doesn't want anyone else to do it to him (its a commercial site too). But yet he steals my bandwidth. What gall!!!

time to change the name of the graphic on your site, then post upload a porn picture and give it the old name... that will stop them.

If you feel the need to be vengeful which happens sometimes.

Create a page with his images all over it, then set an auto page loader such as below and set it to reload every minute....

When the thief visits your site to see what the bandwidth problem is, make sure you post your pissed off message.

Doesn’t It Sucks To Be A Bandwidth/Image Thief!

I am hit regularly by eBay sellers hotlinking to images on my site. For a long time, I wrote to them and asked them nicely to remove the links.

It seems they don't feel they should have to after a bid is placed, because they can only get rid of the links then by cancelling all bids, cancelling the auction, and relisting as a new auction! And that costs them money. But having me pay for their images is apparently OK. Wrong!

Too bad about the cost to them!

So, now I just change the image on my site to another name, then upload a new image in its place. Things like:

FREE NEXT DAY WORLD WIDE SHIPPING TO WINNER!
(This one is really great if it's something big!)

THIS SELLER STEALS BANDWIDTH FROM OTHER SITES. CAN YOU REALLY TRUST THEM ENOUGH TO SEND THEM MONEY?

12 MONTH UNLIMITED MILEAGE BUMPER TO BUMPER WARRANTY! IF IT BREAKS, WE PAY TO HAVE IT FIXED!! (Talk about seeing a listing get cancelled fast!!!)

These people most likely know what they're doing, and even if they don't, they are being rude for not asking first.

I have the same problem on my site. People hotlink my images all the time. Generally, these images end up in forums. But, as they are in forums, pretty soon the posts get buried and the pictures are never viewed.

However, for images used on websites, what works great for me is to have a "photo use policy". I allow people to use my photos provided they a) provide a full link back to my site and b) copy the image to their OWN web server.

This system has worked great. It has prevented a lot of hotlinking problems and provided me with many, many free backlinks.

If you do this, just make sure you have a link for photo/graphic usage somewhere around your graphics so people can see it.

Have you tried disabling hotlinking in the .htaccess file? That should stop them, and you wouldn't have to keep changing file names

    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&i...ess+hotlinking

This one has some good information

Well, is it turned out, b/c of the norton internet security problem, I went out and bought some software to encrypt my files. It seemed to me, that I should check for who was stealing my bandwidth b4 encrypting everything. So now all my files are encrypted and so they shouldn't be able steal the bandwidth anymore.

BTW, the encrypting does seem to work on norton internet security thing, although you do have to change the size of the banners so they are not "standard size"

The problem with putting porno images on, is that it doesn't solve the problem with is keeping the bandwidth to a minimum so I don't have to pay, plus I did that once (or was it twice) and I forgot one of the images on an obscure page of mine. Took me a while to discover it, since I rarely look at the pages online.

Bob: re: bandwidth, I get 5 gig a month for the cowdance site. But since I have 6 sites. Some are not as bandwidth intensive as others, so I spread it around so I can use more.

before i moved to a server that uses cPanel... which has a built in script to activate a ban on hot linking...

I had a hot linking probelm... so i did some research...I found a a free solution
    here

this article tells how to edit the .htaccess to ban hotlinking.

this of coarse is for a unix server.

And, that's the bottom line because it's my2cents!

I've tried the hotlinking feature through CPanel as well as using .htaccess to prevent it. But take a look at your site through the eyes of someone who has a firewall that blocks referrers. Norton, lots of them do this by default. People with these programs don't see any of your images, even if they're on your own site, because with the referrer blocked, your server doesn't know what site they're on!

They just get the "Stolen Image" redirect. I disabled it after seeing how awful my own site looked.

Another option is to find a program that will automatically overlay your url on the image. I have seen certain humor sites do this. It's a great branding tool.

Another option is to just upgrade your package and forget about it. My host charges .75 cents for each GIG, I have seen BW for as low as .30 cents.
