July 23rd, 2009, 10:23 PM #1World's dumbest webmaster -- maybe ME???
I spent two days sounding the alarm bells because I thought Google had de-indexed one of my oldest, largest blogs. Using the "site:www.mydomain.com" search command at google.com, I discovered no urls indexed for one of the blogs in my sig file here. (Hint: It has to do with reading newspapers. ).
For some reason, I went from 300 or so indexed urls to NONE virtually overnight.
I started fiddling around and checking everything I could think of. Then, on a whim, I tried the site command in google using IE 8 (Firefox is my browser of choice) -- PRESTO! All the urls were there after all. I installed the Google Chrome browser -- urls still there. I went to my wife's older version of Firefox on her laptop -- urls STILL there.
Went back to my Firefox -- NO urls for the site, not one.
After scratching a balder spot on the old head, I clicked on "preferences" for fun at google.com in my FF browser. About half way down the page, I noticed that "Safe Search" was selected and set to the highest, strictest option.
I set it at medium, the urls showed; I turned it off, the urls showed; I turned it back on to the highest setting -- the urls for this domain went away.
Now I realized what was going on, based on some razzing a couple of people here gave me (I think it was here) when I bought the domain and set up the blog a couple of years ago. Here's "the rest of the story":
The domain name is almost identical to the name of the blog, which is a good thing, right? Right. BUT -- if you look at the middle of the domain name (which I didn't catch before I bought it and set up the blog), you'll see this sequence of letters:
Get it? That's why Big G wouldn't show any urls from my domain.
I have no idea when or why I set that "Safe Search" option to "on" and to the highest level. No idea.
Just now that I've figured it out, my blood pressure seems to have dropped a few points, and I'm starting to breathe again.Generate more fake news.

heheh I use to use a site call "experts exchange".com to look up IT and computer related problem. One day while typing the domain name in the address bar I saw it a different way... Move the 's' one space to the right.... I think the domain owner saw it the same way because one day they started redirecting to a domain with a hyphen in it.Thanks,

Actually it gets a bit worse if you look at the next three letters as another word.
.....whore...ads..... - sounds like a p*mp*ng operation. For shame. Just what kind of papers have y'all been reading.
But, please don't think you have the market cornered on "dumb moves" in this business. I know that I have a few horror stories I could share and I'm sure that just about everyone else could jump right in with stories of their own.

See Gary, it's that you don't think like Google thinks.

yeah...hyphens are in order here - maybe whores-who-read.com

Google may think the site is about:
A guy who has a paper selling whore ads.
Wonder how many people don't see your site. We have the kids' computer also on high security especially for images.
Have you considered a new domain name (serious)? However, if this is just a fun site and not for monetizing it should be fine.

I dunno, though. I've never had much luck monetizing it and I currently sell a few ads -- nothing related to s*x or p*rn stuff but, hmmmm ...?Generate more fake news.
