August 14th, 2009, 11:27 AM #1I should have stayed in bed this week....
A brief, incomplete but truthful list of things that have broken since Monday:
1.) My desktop PC
2.) My bank account (overdrew it by $23 and was assessed $128 in fees, or a 557% penalty.)
3.) My inground pool.
4.) My hot tub.
5.) My will to LIVE!!!! (j/k)
Next week will be better.

The one that frosts me the most is the bank penalty. That account is play money to me, but imagine if someone really only deposited $125 a week, because that's all they made.
In my case, I made a simple accounting error, thinking I had charged something to my AMEX when I really used my Debit card. I don't carry overdraft protection (or any revolving credit) because we've all seen where that gets us. So, since I had 2 $12 purchases (approved at point of sale mind you), they were each assessed 2 (two!) $32 penalties, or $128.
In someone else's case, that could amount to wiping out an entire weeks pay over $20.
The bank I'm with for my play account brags that they didn't accept any TARP money. In my previous email to them I told them I wasn't surprised. They apparently borrowed it from their customers instead.

In regards to the overdraft...I heard somewhere that Bank Of America actually wrote a program to calculate the best way to impose the most amount fees per member. I think they decided to cap their NSF's at $400 per day. They are so kind. Not that you bank with BofA, just speaking in general with the large mega banks.
I actually pulled all my money out of BofA this morning and opened up a checking/savings with a local bank down the road that pays 4% interest on your checking account balance. Our church has banked with them for years and has a real good relationship.

Sorry your week has gone like this. Sounds to me like you deserve to have a good weekend filled with relaxation ( ie. fishing )

They say those things come in threes. Judging by your list of 4, you still have 2 more to go for the second complete set. Sorry for the positivity. ;-)

Cheer up Kev! Next week will be better. Plus, NFL starts soon with other major sports to follow shortly thereafter. All is good.

Funny... I did stay in bed this week. For the past 3 weeks, in fact.
Sorry you've been having a rough patch. It seems to be going around. Just hang on tight and it'll all blow over soon.

Now, with the money you saved from not using the broken inground pool, and the broken hot tub, you can then buy a new desktop PC, and also be able to have enough money on the bank, in order to avoid any overdraft penalties...
And as for your #5 (My will to LIVE), you must remember this......... NY

Reordering transactions is also fun and legal (and least in Texas).
Let's say you have $75 in your account, and in the morning you buy a burrito ($3) a drink ($1.50) and then lunch ($18). Then you use the wrong card that night and buy a full tank of gas ($74).
The resulting charges will be applied in this order, after the reconcile that night:
Re-ordered from most to least instead of actual time order, so you get the most overdraft possibles. Nifty. (And other reasons, as I understand it.)
Although, I will say...I did something on a spare account similar to Kevin, and after asking the bank nicely, they dropped the fee's. Doesn't hurt to ask...surprised me!

My bank here in H-Town, Sterling Bank, got robbed today off of Westheimer.
They would never charge me an overdraft fee, 'cause if they did, I would drop them like a bad habit.
BUT, I can totally relate to things going wrong this week.
One of my Irrigation Vans needs a new radiator and the trans is leaking juice.
My washing machine stopped draining and had to get a new one.
Got July's Reliant energy bill -
Fridge died on the freezer side - gotta get a new one this weekend.
Dogs chewed a hole in my fence...
Ran out of WeedEater line half-way through doing the lawn today.
And my daughter is in a horrible mood because her BF has been working a ton of hours.
I feel better now.
