    Seeking suggestions
At present my Web operation consists of downloading many datafeeds, cleaning and massaging them, creating/updating databases, creating sitemap changes, zipping them and uploading the results to my shared web server. I then go onto the web server and unzip the data using a script. While this process takes most of a day, my actual involvement is less than 10 minutes.

I am considering rewriting my local programs into PhP and doing the whole operation on the server - however ...

How do folks who process everything on the web servers handle the downloading and processing load?

Do you have separate dedicated servers for the web operation and the processing?

How do you handle the transfer?

Am I (as my wife says) nuts? ... don't fix what aint broke ...

    Don't listen to BB....

Do what you want when you want to do it.

If YOU think it's right, go for it now.

Spend the extra time, money and effort to do what makes you feel good.

I might point out though, that I'm divorced and my ex-wife hates my guts because I did just that.

If it's worth the $50 a month to you then definitely do it. I use Linux Virtual Dedicated servers for something similar but not as intense and I am using maybe 20% of all the different resources.

Code the PHP, set up the MySQL and run CRON jobs on it and on the production server to automate it.

    Good Luck.
