    Wink "pointless babble"
Pear Analytics, based in San Antonio, Texas, said that it randomly sampled 2,000 messages from the public stream of Twitter and separated them into six categories.

The categories were: news, spam, self-promotion, pointless babble, conversational and pass-along value.

I found the comments to be rather incisive, and as far as "self-serving promotion," this study by Pear seems to be boosting a product they're promoting, as seen in Stilgherrian's comment:
The “study” is just a piece of fluff so you can hype up the “Twitter is full of pointless babble” meme, so in turn your client Philtro can say “Look! Our Twitter filter removes the babble!” That’s the same Philtro that’s so shamelessly pimped at the bottom of the original Pear Analytics blog post, yeah?

I agree, a lot of pointless babble. In fact, I can't get my stupid dog to stop posting.

We have a mail woman, too. She brought us one Netflix movie and four pieces of junk mail today. Avoided getting bitten by our watch-cat.
