Check Your Electric Rates!!! Sneaky Electric Companies...
Many years ago, I switched to a cheaper electric provider, Gexa Energy. Like everyone, my rates have soared over the past several years. They've started to come down some, but are still pretty high. I ran across a company offering rates about half of what I've been paying, so I went to our state's public utility commission website that shows all of the current rates (Texas PUC Electric Price Comparison) and discovered that Gexa's public rates were that low, too. Apparently, after my initial contract expired, I dropped into a "month to month" plan where it seems like they basically charge whatever they think they can get away with. I called in and switched to a new contract for the lower rate. Who knows how long I've been overpaying...

I'm not sure if all electric companies do this, or if it's just in some states or just some companies, but check your rates and make sure they're competitive.

I'm back down under 10¢/kWh here now, but I had been about double that and it had just "dropped" to 15.9¢/kWh.

6.56¢ here with SLEMCO rural power co-op. It's been a high quality service for years, and I'm not aware of an option to switch. In the local towns they add on to the power charges and honestly say that's how they get a lot of their funding for other services. Happily rural.

    You can't win!

My base electric power rate is 5.5 cents but the city utility tax adds another 6 cents

Looks like we have 7.4 for another 10 months...

Thanks for the reminder! Need to make sure we handle the renewal before it goes monthly....

I don't believe we do in CA. Cal PUC site only lists the three giant providers that all have monopolies - LA Dept of Water & Power that provides all electricity for City of LA, SoCalEdison that provides all electricity for the rest of Southern Ca, and Pacific Gas & Electric, that provides all electricity for Northern Ca.

We Have SoCallEdison and these crooks have a tiered system, where if you dare to have a refrigerator, a computer, and air conditioning, you get to the fifth and highest tier pretty fast:

    1st tier 12¢
    2d tier 14¢
    3d tier 24¢
    4th tier 27¢
    5th tier 31¢

I used to work for great old sierra pacific electric company....rates are cheaper for home owners than apartment renters, different rates.... big companies get cheaper rates than small companies.....everyone who pays electric bills also pays into helping the less fortunate or the ones that don't like to pay the bills.....also many of the electric companies have kick butt programs but don't advertise them.... I Love the prepaid meter.......yea prepaid meters!!!! Also adore time of use, when you pay less at certain times of the day....tons of kewl programs
