Simple task that I have done many times. Go into Webmaster Tools/Settings and set Preferred domain to Display URLs as www.example.com
The problem is that it won't let me because it says that I need to verify the non-www version. My site is verified for www.example.com and I have followed all the help links to no avail.
This may be a glitch in WMT and before I go to Google group with it I'll try here.

Solved. According to the support forum for WMT there has been a change and now to work around the problem listed in the first post you need to show the non-www as a separate site.
Really sounds wacky, but it worked. I now have example.com and www.example.com listed as sites. It didn't even make me upload another verification file. example.com was instantly verified. Then I went to Settings for the www. version and set the preferred Domain display urls without a problem.

I noticed this before and thought that was stupid.
I ignored it and did a 301 redirect from the non-www to www one.
And let Google figure it out eventually.
Thanks for the info now I know it is not a big thing to do this for the non used domain.
When is Google ever going to figure out that the non and www version are the same thing? It's not like we can buy one and not the other.
