I was checking looking at some of the links adsense is serving up on my site and I noticed that an affiliate has a link directly to a merchants site from the click though on adsense.

    Is that allowed?

Depends on the merchant. The adsense ads are basically adwords ads and i think most merchants don't allow it but some do.

Lets put it this way. I think they know what they are doing is most likely wrong.

When you hold your pointer over the link, it is masked and instead of being able to see a url, you see Go to [Merchants Name]. The actual link is a Linkshare link.

The merchant is active on these boards.

    ??

Some merchants allow it, the only issue google has is if that is the case, you need to mention you are an affiliate somewhere.

How did you know the link was a linkshare link if when you hover it showed the merchant link? Did you copy shortcut and it showed the real link? It would seem that google would have to do something to make that happen.

    All AdSense/AdWords Ads do that.

It's not wrong at all. If a merchant is happy to let their affiliates do this, then that's just fine and dandy.

Some merchants pay companies to run their adwords for them. This is pretty much the same thing except the person only gets paid if a sale is made.

I believe that is the correct way to do it on Adsense. For display purposes, you put in the url that the user will land on (merchantname.com), not the one they will be redirected thru (Linkshare).

Of course Mike and Charlie call this the poorman's BHO.

All the other ads that are showing up don't do that when I hold the mouse over the link, it shows the URL to the site.

So instead of www.whatever.com, it shows Go To [merchants name].

It caught my attention, so I right clicked on the link and grabbed the target and pasted it into word and looked at it.

Had to unencode it to add it to my adsense block list. What a pain.
