    Certainly Pays To Shop Around
The A/C compressor on my SUV is starting to go. I bought a replacement compressor along with the other parts like the drier. I got two names of good local mechanics through recommendations from friends to get quotes on installing my parts and re-charging the system.

The first mechanic owns his own small shop and put an estimate of $140 to install the parts and re-charge the system.

The second mechanic works at a large auto repair chain. Their estimate to install my parts and re-charge the system was $534. Their hourly rate is $100 and they estimated 4.5 hours to do the work.

    Wow, that's quite a variation.

I'm a big believer in using the local shop. Most times the local garage gets the job done right.

When they don't get it right the work tends to result in outcomes like my A/C unit emitting bursts of gamma rays . . directed at my gonads.
I'll get the hang of it eventually. :0)
